Chief Grey Bear Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 http://www.riverhillstraveler.com/2010SMBRBSurvey.pdf Did I just read that?? State wide anglers took an average of 10.2 trips in the year of 2010. They caught an average of 7.1 smallmouth per trip. They havested an average of 1.9 of those smallmouth. Members of the MSA and other organizations took an average of 19.0 trips per year with an average catch of 10.3 smallmouth. They harvested an average of 3.4 smallmouth per trip. What???? Is the very organizations that don't want you harvesting smallmouth...harvesting them themselves??? At a rate of nearly a 1/3 of the catch??? Greasy B Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 I read: Organized Anglers, SBBSMA and SMA. Maybe I overlooked the MSA part. blue79 Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 I never understood how they come up these numbers/percentages.How would they know how many me or any of my friends catch. We never take part in any surveys. And my girlfriend says we have never taken 1.9% of a fish.We either take the whole fish or we throw it back.
Feathers and Fins Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 That reminds me of the waterfowl harvest information they come up with. How in the HEdouble Hockey sticks could they have a valid number. Sorry Charlie pulling numbers out of a hat doesnt cut it. A couple years ago they said the Central Flyway shot 200 Eider really lmao. Guess they have to justify the money to biologist with meaningless surveys and math. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
mic Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 It is hard to explain, but it is a statistical analysis using random surveys. It is basically the same political reports before an election. Depending on the number of surveys, they can be quite accurate. Believe it or not the math is actually pretty solid if done right.
Wayne SW/MO Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 It does raise some questions. Organized Rock Bass fishermen? Didn't know there was such a thing. Frankly the higher percentage of kept bass by "organized" is really questionable. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Outside Bend Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 How dare they! Those scientists, using "math" and "statistics" to draw conclusions. I just wish those folks at MDC could get it through their heads: we want them using numbers and science to manage our fisheries, just not when it conflicts with our worldview. If you guys wanna know how they came up with the numbers- reading the first paragraph is a good start. The "organized angler" creel rates may be a little high, if only because there's a smaller sample pool than anglers-at-large. And I'm sure it was more than MSA members. The "one in ten anglers fishes springs/spring branches," stat seemed a little misleading- it's probably not a huge subset of anglers, many probably live pretty close to the springs, and many probably aren't gung-ho about filling out surveys or letting on how many fish they've creeled. It'd be easy to undersample them in a randomly assigned survey. <{{{><
Chief Grey Bear Posted February 9, 2013 Author Posted February 9, 2013 I read: Organized Anglers, SBBSMA and SMA. Maybe I overlooked the MSA part. I would love to know where you found that info??? You can tell by the responses, that no one read the link. I am not sure what other organizations were a part of the survey but, we do know that every member of the MSA recived one. And is somewhere around 250+ members. Or over half of the 476 "organized" anglers that the states were kept seperate from. But at any rate, club members are keeping a ton of smallmouth. Greasy B Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 But at any rate, club members are keeping a ton of smallmouth. You should be proud of us. When are you joining?
