I run into my bee mentor yesterday, a fine old man of 89. I have learned alot from him the past few years, he is like my third Grandpa.

I notice some red on his fingers that looked like blood and asked him "did you cut your self or something"? He looked down and said "Oh that, its just red paint".

He proceed into story mode and explained about all of the troubles he has had with the city squirrels eating his pecans, digging up his garden, and other problems with them. He has been trapping them for years. I had seen a few of them. Some of them ended up in the stew pot, but most he relocated to the Elks Lodge about a mile away. One day after he released a trapped one, he went inside for a beer and sit down next to a retired MDC employee and struck up a conversation. The MDC guy told him he was wasting his time, the squirrel would probably be back home before he got there.

So my mentor had an idea. He was going to test that theory and prove him wrong. That is where the red paint on his hand come from. "I paint the little c suckers red to see if they really return, and I have not seen any of the red ones back in my yard".

That made my day. So if you are ever in my neck of the and see a red latex painted squirrel, you know where they come from.

I hope that 40 years from now I am still going like him.

Travel a mile in a days time. Grey squirrels can run 20mph for a short distance.

I've been feuding with the squirrels for the last few weeks, eating everything we put out for the birds. I've gotten back in practice shooting my .22, and had a few really nice squirrel meals. Of course, I'm not in the city. Some of you may have heard about the guy in Chesterfield who was shooting them with an air rifle. The neighbors complained and the city passed an ordinance that you can't shoot an air rifle within 150 yards of a residence. He backed off for a while, but just bought a scope-sighted BB gun and wants to challenge the ordinance all the way to the state supreme court. It better be a pretty powerful BB gun, though.

If you shoot them with a BB gun it will cause a very bad infection. Then you just follow the squirrel around for a few days like a Monitor Lizard

They ate a hole in one of my feeders and whenever i found one in the feeder i would sneak up to the side and throw my jacket over it and take it to my buddys house.He would shoot it with a pump up pellet gun,clean it,and throw it in the freezer.My buddy was disabled and no income so i would keep the feeder full of seed and his freezer full of squirrel.That feeder was better than any minnow trap i ever made.

A buddy of mine who lives in my neighborhood ran an extension cord out to the tree that held one of his bird feeders. He stripped the wires on the end of it and wired it to the wire hanger for the feeder which is what the squirrels used to climb down to the feeder by. So he dug a shallow trench and buried this extension cord which was plugged in to an outside socket which he had hooked to a light switch in the kitchen. Many hours of fun he had zapping squirrels off the feeders, but he said they learned pretty quick to stay away from that tree.
