mic Posted February 19, 2013 Author Posted February 19, 2013 Nice work mic. Don't wait on spring though. Its here! Chief, you a lawyer? Come on 60 degree water
Dutch Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 SWEET. Where you get the jig heads? I pour the heads myself then powder paint them. How do you fish them? I've been fishing my under a bobber just above the weeds on the local pond. I swim them or hop them off the bottom. I use craft hair for the jigs under the bobber, FnF.
Wayne SW/MO Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I pour the heads myself then powder paint them. I did that for awhile, but being mostly lazy I quit. I haven't made any in awhile now, but started taking a different approach, rattle can! Given the fact that my old friend Ollie never used anything but lead color, and caught more fish than most, it appears that head color isn't critical to the fish. I hung mine on a wire coat hanger and sprayed them with primer. After they dried I sprayed them with a flat camo paint. One could obviously do white or chartreuse, I tied every thing in browns and olives for bottom work. I never had a problem with losing paint from use or in storage. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
ollie Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Still don't Wayne! I don't see an issue with painting them except they look cool to us. "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!

You saying that you tie a ball with lead wrap and paint that?

Wayne SW/MO Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 You saying that you tie a ball with lead wrap and paint that? No. I would take my raw jigs, naked, and hang them on a metal coat hanger hanging from a nail. This so the won't slide together. Take a can of primer and spray the heads. After it drys I painted them with a can of flat camo paint. What I used was olive and brown because that was the color most of my skirts were. My best colors were those colors in bucktail with 2 legs on each side, chartreuse on the olive and orange on the brown. This wasn't a commercial finish, but it worked well for me. It was cheap, easy, and durable. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
exiledguide Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 One of the most important people you can encounter in your life is a first class jig maker or you will spend many winter nights in your basement or garage trying to construct the perfect leadhead jig. It's almost as bad as fly tying and much worse than rod building.
Dutch Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Here are some of the hair jigs. Here is the craft hair I use for FnF jigs. Here is a sample of an FnF jig.
mic Posted February 21, 2013 Author Posted February 21, 2013 Holy Crap batman. That is sweet. Thanks for sharing.
