Still Some Crappie In The James River Arm, .....but.....

Your gonna have to deal with the crowds. Lots of spoonbill snaggers out and everyone else looking for whites and crappie. We fished from day break till about 1:30 pm to get our limits of crappie today, and there were boats everywhere. Caught lots of crappie first thing this morning on any color swimming minnow with 1/16th oz. heads. Let it sink and ever so slow real it in. Found most of them in one little hole in about 12 feet of water where the flats drop off to the creek channel and 3 submerged trees show on the graph. Everywhere else, we really had to work for them. Caught some in 5 FOW on flats and some in 22 FOW hugging brush piles. We did pick up 7 or 8 whites today also on the swimming minnows. Some of them were way up Flat Creek in 4-5 feet of water. Game Wardens are out. We got checked taking the boat out.....better stay legal!

Had a great time fishing with fellow OAF'er Jason Essary today. Great guide that fella is!

Mainly snaggers but they watched my buddy and his dad catch crappie in Flat Creek for a while. I hate to admit this but myself and another got ticketed at Bridgeport because we didnt have our paddlefish labeled at the dock. I ran off and left my tags at home but figured we would sleep a few hours a d get up and clean them early but the agents were already there and seen them. It is good to see them out doing their jobs though.

The agents have been making their presence known for the last couple of weeks in that area. I thanked her for checking us today and being out there.

I wish our game wardens would check people more often. I think there's just so few of them is the biggest problem. I see so many illegal fish being kept and usually call but it's pretty rare for them to respond at all and when they do it seems like whoever was doing it is usually gone by then. I did get to watch a guy get all his gear taken for netting crappie a few weeks ago, pretty much made my day :)

That is a great mess of crappies! I'm coming down from Michigan in a couple of weeks. Our limit is 25, with no length restriction, but most of the ones we keep are between 10-12 inches. What's the limit on Table Rock?

How was he netting crappie?

Was he using a cast net? I would think it would be hard to do with a dip net.

My buddy called this evening and said the the three in his boat ended up with 39 keepers today. They caught the majority of them on shallow flats with no apparent cover around. They had 5 that were 14".

He also said as soon as the front moved in and they felt the temp start dropping the bite shut off like somebody flipped a switch.
