I was working today and I went out fishing at Creighton Access on the James, that is correct I was paid to go fishing for three hours in fact! Anyway I caught a couple small channel cats then near the end of my trip I caught, on chicken liver, this very different fish. I had accidentally snagged what I think was another one moments earlier that was no more than a minnow, but I have no idea what it is. I tried looking it up on my own but there's way too many fish to look through. It had these weird spots on its head. Anyway I've got nothing but I only ever fish for catfish so I don't go outside my comfort zone much.

I believe that might be a carpsucker.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Nope, it's a big striped shiner, close kin to the common shiner. They get up to about 8 inches long, and sometimes hit artificial lures. The males have tubercles on their heads this time of year...spawning thing.

I caught 4 of those big shiners, the weekend before last in the Finley on a small rebel crawdad crank.

As a matter of fact, I had to change lures because I kept catching the slimy things.

Those shiners sometimes get really ambitious. This one on the White tried to eat a Rogue, poor guy.... Notice the pink spinning rod, be jealous...

I bought my girlfriend a 6'6" M/F pink Plueger setup a few years ago and I always find myself using that that setup for shakey heads, trick worms, and small cranks.
