Members jgentile Posted May 30, 2013 Members Posted May 30, 2013 This guy is a long way from home. I caught him about 3 miles upstream of Huzzah Valley Resort, drifting a pink chenille "senko" streamer. This little rainbow came complete with claw/talon marks on its' back. And I thought that I would take a break from trout fishing. What was I thinking? Joe
mic Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 Isn't there a trout farm up the creek that dumps in at the Huzzah Valley resort?
Members jgentile Posted May 30, 2013 Author Members Posted May 30, 2013 Did not know that Westover dumps into the Huzzah, makes sense. I kinda liked the idea of the brave little rainbow making a right turn at the Meramec and swimming upstream. I might pay to fish Westover one day. They do it out west all the time and it is a lot closer to STL than my other options.
Old plug Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 Huzzah is my old stomping grounds. As well as the Meramec. Wife's family has been in the Leasburg area since about 1815. I have caught trout in the the huzzah as far down as its mouth in the late fall and early spring. I thought they stopped stocking them. I caught a rainbow down there one time in November about 2 lbs rolling a small plastic worm over the bottom. I think the they come down father if the weather chills the water enough.
Al Agnew Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 As I said when somebody mentioned they caught a trout in the Big PIney, high, cool water like we had this spring makes rainbows move around a lot. It's fairly common to find a few right at Huzzah Valley, which is right where Dry Creek comes in (Westover is on Dry Creek). I've caught a couple above Huzzah Valley. There's a spring that comes in at a backwater a few miles upstream, and the ones I caught were at the mouth of the backwater, where the cooler water was up against the current. Once water temps on the river get up into the 60s, whatever trout have wandered into the warm water back when it was cold start looking for cooler water, and gravitate to these springs.
Old plug Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 Yeah there are not many. The one I mentioned was the first trout I ever caught. I just rolled a little creme plastic worm over the edge of a drop off into a hole and there I was. I never caught a decent trout after that in my life until the last trout I ever caught period fishing with wrench one time down at Bennett springs.
Members carptracker Posted June 1, 2013 Members Posted June 1, 2013 Early morning on Mother's Day was fishing some back water with no luck on the upper Meramec. Decided to turn around and cast at the edge of the current. Was surprised to hook a nice sized trout (very silver colored compared to park trout) on a wiggle wart. Bigger surprise was the next cast into the same area produced a very nice sized smallie which inhaled the wart. Really think that silver trout's fighting action turned on the smallie to bite. Smallies seem to like to follow hooked fish. If two folks are fishing looks like it would pay to cast behind the fish that is hooked. Great Meramec memory!
Members MattS Posted June 25, 2013 Members Posted June 25, 2013 There is also another place on the Huzzah that holds trout. The owner of Westover, a friend of mine, told me about it. Looked in the rain for a while and all i found was a dozen dead pigs. Why someone would leave dead pigs right next to the parking lot is beyond me
