johnboy2bfishin Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 Got started at 5:30 first stop was just past point 5 from Indian point. Dropped the trollin motor and did t take lo g for the fish to show themselves. Thru the redfin and hooked up on 4th cast fish just came up just sucked down. No splash or aerial display set the hook and the fight was on. Then snap the fish got me around the dock cable i assume and broke me off. I liked that in too took me 2 years to find one that worked right. Tied on a spook and commenced to laying it on . No big ones just fun and got me a mess of whites out of the deal. Had about 15-16 bass on top and about that many on grub. Fish were relating to main lake points and pockets for me. Sexy shad color on the spook and salt and pepper grub on 1/4oz head

Water should be just about warm enough to get out the goggles or scuba mask and go get that back.
johnboy2bfishin Posted June 2, 2013 Author Posted June 2, 2013 Yea that would work. Would rather catch that fish.
Flippin Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Nice report. A good topwater bite always makes for a lot of fun. Do you have any tips on getting the fin to ride high on the water? It seems like mine whats to dip just below the surface.
gitnby Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Are you tying directly to nose ring or using a split ring? You can try bending the nose ring up slightly. Keep rod tip high initially on retrieve and then slowly drop it as it gets closer. Takes a bit of practice to get the right combo of retrieve and line tie. Some guys will heat up the bill and bend it, but I've never done that.

Some guys will heat up the bill and bend it, but I've never done that. I heated the bill up using a hot blow dryer and it did work for bending the bill like you want it. That said it didn't work and it is still a work in progress finding the right angle. I might just remove the whole bill and glue in different sizes and shapes circuit board and see what that does.
Bill Babler Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Quit messing with the Fin's. Take off all the hardware and replace it with very small size 2 split rings on all the hooks and in the nose. Replace the hooks with size 4 gamakatsu, or Diiachi Deathtraps. When you throw the fin start it back with the rod in a very upright position, and continue to drop the rod as the bait wakes back to the boat. Keep the rod pointed directly over the back of the bait and most will work. You will everyday have to adjust your speed to keep it waking as you like. IF it goes under, stop the bait and start all over, even if you just try and slow down, it will stay subsurface. Bending and Heating does pretty much nothing but ruin the bait. One small error your fault his fault anyone's fault and you have just cost yourself 9 bucks. Once you have it running, do not stop the bait do not jerk the bait. Just wind it in. If a fish misses it keep winding, never stop. When a fish grabs it, just continue winding and reinstall the rod to an upright attitude to keep a bend and the pressure on the bait. They will stay hookied. IF you jerk it you made a big mistake. Simple as that. If it doesn't work, throw it in a box and buy another one. I currently have about 2 dozen that work perfect and twice that amount that run in a circle. Good Luck http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com

Jason Essary Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 First, Boys if anyone is looking to fish a redfin then they need to make a copy of Bills post above and laminate it and keep it in the boat. It works amazing here (when that bite is on) and that is the best explaination I have ever heard. Phil should post that on a best of so people can find it easier. Always here every year a dozen people asking and that is the answer. Huntest, ya but a feather on it.
