Chief Grey Bear Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 I understand JD, that people have certain fears. But you, of all people, being an outdoors person, with a massive weapons arsenal placed strategically at every orifice of your house, your car, and your person, your least fear should be a creature with no defense. jdmidwest Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 I have worried about the snakes in the grass for many years now. It is not a fear, it is just looking out for one's own self. Always being aware of any dangers and removing the known ones when possible before they create a problem. Poison snakes do have their own built in defenses. I also kill wasps and yellow jackets too. Old plug Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 It will be a cold day in hell before you ever see a cottonmouth on lake if the Ozark's.
Wayne SW/MO Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 It will be a cold day in hell before you ever see a cottonmouth on lake if the Ozark's. Yup. Not that many farther south either. I've seen water moccasins, sorry that's what I grew up calling them, lie on the bottom and I always believed they were lying in ambush waiting for a minnow to swim by. I suppose they could be freezing up to hide, but they have never seemed to be that afraid of humans when they are in the water. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Jason R. Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 We have plenty down here in central AR if yall need some. I see about five every time I fish the Arkansas River. Big ones too. Yup. Not that many farther south either. Goggle-Eyed Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 It will be a cold day in hell before you ever see a cottonmouth on lake if the Ozark's. I thought there had been a few confirmed up the Little Niangua River? Maybe not, but an old retired Conservation agent told me that about 30 years ago, he was already retired at that point but I believed him and would have assumed if they were in the river they could also survive in the Lake... Not an expert but last summer I did see a "very dark and fat" snake swimming with 90% of his body out of the water while was fishing the big niangua river... Didn't get close enough to ID it other than I have never seen any other snake swim that far "on top" of the water. Again would have assumed if they could survive above Tunnel Dam they could be in the lake as well.....
lee G. Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 30 years ago, I was told by a snake guy that there was a small population of cottenmouths below the dam at LOZ. I never saw any there, but he was a guy that would know
Jerry Rapp Posted June 14, 2013 Posted June 14, 2013 thanks for the reminder JD. I have a wasp nest to nuke this evening when they return.
