Josh Holt Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 These are a couple jigs I just got done powder coated heads green pumkin with gamakatsu hooks. The colors I made today are green pumpkin orange and green pumkin purple fleck with some purple thrown in the mix. Let me know what you all think of these and give me some feed back on what you would change about them or just other colors cause I can make these in any color and any size these are 3/8oz but can make them from 1/4 to 1oz. I can even put eyes on them.
Members CanoeBoy Posted July 3, 2013 Members Posted July 3, 2013 The purple and green 3/8 is something I always use with a matching creature bait on Table Rock and it always seems to catch fish. Maybe add some black or black and green w the purple. Fished the state park today and it was a slow bite, but I did manage to hit a grand slam with the purple and green jig. Caught 1 Kentucky, 6 Smalleys, and 2 Large mouth. Did not catch numbers but 3 Smalleys and 1 Largey were over 3 lbs so not bad I guess. 1 of the Smalleys and 1 of the Larges that were over 3 lbs were caught on a spook in the morning, but the jig is usually my go to bait on the lake. Nice lookin jigs!
MOsmallies Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Jigs look awesome! I just bought a skirt making tool and plan to start tying my own here soon. Post some more patterns if you have them. Did you tie them with copper wire, or just a rubber collar?
Josh Holt Posted July 3, 2013 Author Posted July 3, 2013 I tied them with black wire from fin and feather they also have it in green but I have a ton of this black wire left so I just use it. I dont like to use rubber collars cause the dry rot makeing the life of your jig shorter and they get tore up from fish. I can make 50 jigs an hour once i get the heads poured but i have got over 1000 heads poured up.
MOsmallies Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Awesome... I plan on using the collar to get the strands situated nicely on the jighead, then tying the strands down with wire and cutting of the rubber collar. How many clumps of skirt material did you use to tie each jig?
Dutch Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 With todays bands you don't need to wire them. I have some 3 year olds with bands that are holding up just fine.
Jerry Rapp Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 trim the weed guards back to where they are just behind the hook point. Otherwise, they look great!
Josh Holt Posted July 3, 2013 Author Posted July 3, 2013 I used three per each jig two of your base color and one of what ever you want such as green pumpkin purple two of green pumkin one purple has the perfect amount of skirting or to make three colors use one of each color. I throw a jig alot and I have not found a rubber collar that did not dry rot and cause you to loose your skirt. Plus the pro of useing wire is the fish don't pull the skirt down causeing your collar to get damaged now the down side of useing the wire is you cant attach a rattle unless glued to the hook but I don't use a rattle very often. But as far as it makeing a difference on getting bit it doesn't matter if you have wire or rubber collar it's all in how its fished.
Josh Holt Posted July 3, 2013 Author Posted July 3, 2013 Jerry I do trim them back on a 45 degree angle lol thats the last step when i get a batch done I made around 50 of these today 25 of each I also did some with black weed gaurds cause i ran out of the green, I also do make some with two coated wires coming out of the front in a v so the hook is right between them, I like those better cause you get way better of a hookset and don't have to jerk as hard but these here were made for a friend of mine.
