Smalliebigs Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Well after slave labor and taking my nephew fishing on Saturday, I had planned to hook with fellow forum member MIC and do some fishing Sunday. We have talked a lot on the phone exchanging ideas and just discussing fishing in general for awhile. So we finally decided to meet up and go hit some water. I felt horrible as I didn't get back to the St.Louis area until about 1:30am and slept in and was not ready to go on time. That is a huge pet peeve of mine and that fact that I had committed this sin on Mike was really making feel bad, I kept apologizing over and over. Mike is a funny guy he told me if I was to apologize once more he would pull some of my nose hairs out with his needle nose...lol. Let me say this about Mike his unbridled enthusiasm to go hit a stream was priceless and when I see that it gets me very excited as well. We mulled over where to go and because I screwed us a bit with the time I thought we should try somewhere close to town. We went wade fishing in a creek that has Smallmouth bass management program in place even though the stream has very little public access. A good friend of mine has a large piece of land on this creek so we accessed thru his land. This is where my respect level for Mike elevated as the field and fences we had to climb and woods and embankment we had decent were brutal to say the least. Mike had a smile on his face and just wanted to get in the creek....most people would have probably turned around and said to me, um do you know of another creek??? Mike wanted some fish and I really felt compelled to put him on some nice fish. We finally made into the creek after tracking thru some vegetation that looked like something from Vietnam. I have fished this creek quite a few times in the past but, upstream from where we were this day. It looked like good water but, I did notice a big population of rough fish from the Mississippi in there, we saw very large Asian and Common carp, also some big Drum. I might go back with a fly rod to chase a few of those Carp....I doubt mike will want to go.... lol. The other big and very discouraging observation was the amount of tires in the stream bed, it was utterly pathetic!!!! We worked are way up stream for a stretch and Mike is like me, always changing patterns, I loved it. The fishing was less than stellar and the Smallmouth population in that stretch was abysmal but, the company was very good as really enjoyed fishing with Mike, I truly get a kick out of fishing with someone who is as enthusiastic about stream fishing as me. We caught a few dink smallies but, mostly it was Largemouth. Mostly it was great meeting Mike in person and getting out somewhere, he is stream fishing FREAK and I love it!!!! Mike, next time I'll take you somewhere that we don't need a machete The fish were very subtle with how they were taking it.....a weightless or very light weight rigged in soft plastics was the ticket...I think Mike caught a few on top water and I caught a decent one on top water but, it wasn't fishing that great at all. Some green bass like Mitch said the hands don't lie....we were just messing around
Flysmallie Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Dang that second one must weigh 47 pounds!! I also fished with somebody new yesterday. Chief took me to a little spot in SW Mo. We didn't do that good but we caught some smallies and I am king of the creek chubs. It was an absolutely beautiful place though.

mic Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Mike, next time I'll take you somewhere that we don't need a machete... What the hell, that isn't any fun then.
mic Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Flysmallie... looks like your shaking your creek chub. ... I am king of the creek chubs.
Flysmallie Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Flysmallie... looks like your shaking your creek chub. Nope, that's Chief.
Chief Grey Bear Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Well, at least no weapons were involved. We did run into a land owner while wading this creek and she couldn't have nicer. Even pointed out a spot that holds fish for us to hit. I hadn't fished this creek in a couple of years and let me tell you it has changed tremendously! Though there is no gravel mining on it, all of my favorite holes have filled in. Every spot I took Ronnie to was not anyting like they were. I was almost embarrased that I took him there. But there was great scenery and we did catch a few dinks. Now if I can just get Scott down here sometime, I'll take him to better spot! LOL! Smalliebigs Posted July 30, 2013 Author Posted July 30, 2013 I'm down brother....tell me when but when I come down it will be for a couple of days..... at least....that creek valley in the one pic looks just amazing!!!! I know how ya feel some creeks I have hit in the past don't even look like themselves....filled in holes that used be 5 to 7 feet deep...it's a bummer but, hopefully olde mother nature will take care of it for us in the not too distant future....I hope Well, at least no weapons were involved.
