oneshot Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 Ok this river is going to be my final resting place. From a person that much of his family has been involved in the Outfitter Industry for last 20 years. This season everything has been perfect for Camping and Floating. Yes one time I made the mistake going fishing on a Saturday evening, very crowded, yes one fish I had to bring in between about 20 Canoes.Yes I've dealt with Drunks and few being High but with them most have been courteous Sorry,How you doing? Happy Holiday,Yes Sir and No Sir. Roads around the Outfitters are very crowded, just have to take your time. 3 Months very busy the place is alive but people in the area are making money,in these times its a Good Thing.Yes every so often something Bad happens but need to keep in mind how many people we are dealing with.Hey its on the down hill slide for this year. oneshot
fishinwrench Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 My daughter and her group of misfits floated the Elk a couple weeks ago and from what I gather via her accounting of THAT river the Niangua is pretty PG-rated by comparison.

fishinwrench Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 Saw a hoot owl givin'it to a chicken once, but I figured that was just "nature".
Al Agnew Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 Pretty funny rant in places, and perhaps there is some hypocrisy in an outfitter complaining about what the rivers have become, but I do agree with him in a lot of places. We do NOT have to accept the kind of behavior that has become so common on these rivers, and responsible outfitters, some of whom are members of this site, can and do try to make a difference. I pointed this out in one of the other threads, but I'll note again that living as I do for a good part of the summer in Montana on the Yellowstone River, and spending some weekend summer time on the lower Madison, which is Bozeman's party river, I have to say that littering is practically non-existent and lewd and abusive behavior is very uncommon, so this isn't something that is inevitable everywhere. Yes, we have to put up with crowds on the popular Ozark streams, but we shouldn't have to tolerate the kind of behavior that gets someone arrested in any other public venue. Yes, most weekend floaters are just out to have a good time, but there most certainly are a subset of them that is pretty common that takes the "good time" to obnoxious extremes. And while the outfitters can do some things to help, the only thing that will really curtail the bad behavior is some serious law enforcement presence.
fishinwrench Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 It's not the same group of wildasses all the time creating havoc on the river though, and in all fairness everyone should be allowed ONE rowdy river party in their life. And it would suck to get busted during your one wild river party just because the last group that got a little wild on their ONE allotted river bash "bothered someone". There's also a matter of how "partying" is perceived. Can you imagine the story that a "senior couple" might still be telling if they had been floating past Sunburst during the making of the Harlem shake video? "Keep your eyes straight ahead, Mildred, there's a bunch of crackheads up there.....if they come toward us you just keep a paddlin' and I'll reach for the Ruger". "Crazy asses! The rivers around here have gone to hell". "Did you see the guy humping that chicken? Yeah, and he's the OWNER of the place!" "My God, there were even children there". See how that works?
Mitch f Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 Getting stone drunk and exhibiting rude behavior is a time tested Ozark tradition, much like gigging! All kidding aside, the population in America is just not as friendly as it used to be. No manners, no patience, and no morals. The river sometimes brings out the lowest rung of the food chain. I realize we are drowning and all I'm doing is describing the water but this problem will not be easy to fix unless they take drastic measures which no one will like...including the outfitters. Well do know a lot of Guys that work the Canoes they get Little Pay,set around all Winter doing Odd Jobs, yes they may Drink and do Drugs but seems to be the norm.Far as bestiality when I was a Kid growing up sex it was either Kin or Cows. Just thought of something being on the river more isolated maybe we are getting the Party Cove crowd from LOZ? oneshot

Nope, I don't buy that reasoning. It's pretty easy to tell the difference between "drunk and loud" and the sort of things that I've seen the few times I've been on the Meramec on a summer Saturday. I'm talking about things that are really against the law, as well as things like guys whipping out their johnsons in front of my then 12 year old niece, propositioning my then 16 year old niece, threatening to turn our canoes over, squirting us with high powered water guns. There's a reason there have been billboards on the roads leading to the popular canoe rental areas of the Meramec that advertise legal services for people who get in trouble on the river.
Jack Jones Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Personally I could care less about the nudity and the propositioning. I've taught my daughter to generally ignore that and trust her to not be too shocked. If they are ignorant enough to do that with me around then i figure they are too far gone to know what they are doing. Flipping over canoes and/or shooting with a water cannon has the potential to provoke a violent response in me. That's assaultive and unnecessary. That angers me. In the immortal words (edited) of the rapper T.I.: A n****** put his hands on me alright. Otherwise stand there talk s**t all night Plain and simple, I not into conflict and people can name call, cat call, or say what they want but there is never a call for tipping/water gunning anyone whose minding their own business.
