Shortly after I posted last night at 10 something, talking about Midway losing their power, the ice storm hit and we lost power. We got about 3/4 of an inch of ice, and 1 or 2 inches of snow. The ice was a killer.

Most of the trees around us are damaged. My power was out for about 16 hours. Just came back on

We got 3-4 inches of ice followed by 6-7 inches of snow here in St. Charles.

I shoveled our 3 car driveway of the snow and chipped ice off of half of it. We have a pretty good slope down to the cul-de-sac and all the kids in the neighborhood were sliding down the ice half all day and into the night tonight.

My 7 year old daughter was out there all day and cried when we took her boots off because her feet itched and burned. Then she had dinner a couple minutes ago followed by hot chocolate and she passed out right there at the kitchen table.

I'm using a mister bottle tonight to really get it slick for tomorrow. Tomorrow maybe we'll get out the outdoor firepit and roast some mellows.

Gotta love snow days even if there isn't any fishin around here.

My kid called and came over to the house last night at... midnight. Normal for a college boy. He and a couple of friends came over for sleds. The went down the road north of WalMart- Forsyth Rd? Anyhow- they lived... lived to get back to campus in time for an annual tradition at College of the Ozarks (one I hadn't heard of till this year). 70 boys "streaked" from the dorm to the chapel and back at 1:30 am. My youngest son (freshman) said most had their skivies on. Marsha said that's not streaking- not in our day. :) But seeing 39 students were either suspended or put on probation a few weeks ago, they may have taken the safe way to go.

We had the worst ice storm in 30 years here. Wife and I spent a not-very-restful night lying in bed listening to trees falling in the woods next to the house. It was a little worrisome, since there are some big trees that could have fallen on the house. One fell about 50 feet from our bedroom, but fell away from the house. The power kept going on and off, finally going off for real in the middle of the night. We are fortunate in that it came back on in mid-morning, since a lot of the area around us is still without power.

Wife had to get into town today so I had to get out with the tractor and push downed cedar trees out of our 1/3 mile driveway.

On the other hand, sitting in the hot tub on our deck tonight was gorgeous, with the bright moonlight shining in the ice-covered trees. And split pea soup, made with the ham bone left over from Thanksgiving, was delicious.

Hope you take some pictures tonight. It will be the ultimate: making lemonade out of the lemons, you've been dealt.

Hey, John... can you...well.. your wife... be a little more specific on that recipe? It sounds like something I'd enjoy.

Terry,

I've added the receipe for the seaweed soup on the receipe page. If you have any questions let me know. Hope you enjoy.

This has NOT been a good week. Right after the power came on my oldest son got sick. Bad sick. Made quick run to the Emergency room, only 12 hours, :( and found out he had menegitis. darn that was scary. I will be glad when this week is over.

He's stuck in the hospital all weekend, but they caught it in time. :o

 SQUIRRELS FALLING FROM THE SKY !!

Very serious storm in the St. Louis area with 170,000 still without power. Many I work with in that boat and it's causing much hardship.

However, there is a funny side. My daughter told me she was watching local FOX station news Friday morning and they were broadcasting live from the news chopper over a heavily wooded neighborhood watching tree limbs go down. All of a sudden the airborne reporter zooms the camera in on a squirrel that lost it's grip on an ice covered tree limb and went plunging down about 70 feet to the ground ! One dead tree rat... Then they zoomed in on another one and then another one after that. Three falling squirrels in about five minutes. So, Saturday morning I watched the woods behind my place and in about 20 minutes I saw the same thing. Having had squirrels invade my attic and do much damage I started cheering for the ice. I would have thought the little buggers could get a grip on the ice but apparently they make mistakes too. Anybody else notice this ? ( Boy, you can tell you're getting cabin fever when you're watching squirrels do a nose dive ! ) ha !
