If you want to catch a lot of gar go to Mallard Lake, the lake behind Creve Couer. That thing is literally filled with them.

Mo guy just be sure you equipped see the heavy glove in the above picture it is mandatory. Steel leader also.

Yeah I made sure to have the rubber dipped glove which helped a ton. Actually caught it on 8 lb test P-Line CX Premium and M action spinning gear. Steel leader is probably smart though.
