Chief Grey Bear Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Smaller creeks are perfect for wading with smaller kids when you are introducing them to the wonderful world of fishing. And the fish make it even better due to the almost constant action! joeD Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 It's weird. Now that we can easily digitally record everything, when it comes to stream fishing for smallmouth bass in the Ozarks, we record and display nothing (except for big fish). Goes to show how special we know our resource is,
RSBreth Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 I thought shots of running water ( But Joe, we filmed at the waters LEVEL, check THAT out) were taboo. So... we left them out. And this is on topic?
Wayne SW/MO Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 I don't carry one tenth of the lures for river fishing that I do for lake fishing. For one thing river conditions are more predictable and then there the time factor. It's easy to stay in one spot and fish 20' deep on a lake then crank up the motor and head to the ramp. On a river float more often then not you have to monitor your time and that. for me, eliminates going through a lot of changing. I think most of us who have fished for smallies in the streams tend to fish a limited number of known high percentage producers.I've often been guilty of carrying too many cranks, but seldom guilty of throwing them all too much. For 3 or 4 will produce if they want cranks and I seem to catch fewer if I try to throw too many different lures. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Old plug Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Its funny all the lure coming up. Just yesterday I cleaned house on my lures. I loaded 3 big plastic boxes with stuff and put them away to hopefully go to some future generation. I have grand daughter no boys in the line of the next generation. But I am sure some somewhere down the line my genes will get involved and someone is going to give birth to a fishing bum. I do not use crank baits much and they were the first ones went in the box. I am a jig and worm man and not much of anything else. There are so many ways and variation to using those two alone that I have little use for anything else. I think of all the baits these are the jigs are the most effective and versatile of all followed by plastic worms. But I do like some top waters during short times. I know that buzz big bladed buzz baits are very good. But myself I do not like to cast them. You will not find a rainbow of color in my locker either. I think in the vein if either light or dark.
Guest Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Yes you're right, I rarely if ever fish smaller streams anymore and have only fished out of a canoe once or twice in the last 10 years and that was with you and Andy. I live on the banks of Clear Creek which is a tributary of the Illinois River running thru Fayetteville & Johnson. A nursing home and cul-de-sac in the Johnson area has been flooded twice in 7 days, like many other places around the Ozarks. This happens to be a feeder creek that only runs hard in heavy rain events. It washes all kinds of flood debris from backyards and city streets. I've caught big largemouth flipping a jig to logs in heavy current. Urban Suburban Bass Fishing!! LOL
Mitch f Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 I really like this new Strike King 3 XD, runs 10-12 ft and is only 2" long (the body). I always wanted to get and extra 2-3 feet depth out of my wiggle wart and this one fits the bill. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
MOsmallies Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Come on Mitch! Now I gotta look at these and add a few to my TackleWarehouse order! Always looking for new cranks in this depth range for up on the river.
