I thought a thread about the strangest things we have seen while fly fishing (or other fishing) might be humorous. As we know fishing gives us a lot of time outdoors and that seems to be where the weird stuff happens. In order to get the ball rolling, I'll go first.

One day my wife and I were fly fishing on hickory creek. it was a calm day very mild and peaceful, we had caught a few fish but nothing worth bragging about, we were working our way upstream hoping to hook into some big rainbows. We had seen nobody in the park or the creek that day, the park felt as if it was totally empty. In one pool a good size rainbow rose violently and ate some small insect inches away from where we stood,( though I couldn't get it to take that time I came back later and got him.) As we walked around the bend in river we both stopped dead in our tracks. Ahead of us suddenly we saw fifty people standing on the handicap fishing area. all were dressed up and looking out in the creek. while fishing we had suddenly stumbled into a baptism. Perhaps baptisms aren't all that weird themselves, but to suddenly walk into one dripping with creek water and smelling like fish was both odd and unexpected. Needless to say we got out and hoofed it around the ceremony the rest of the way up the creek.

I'm sure you guys have seen far weirder stuff but this is mine so far.

Let the summer of Carp, begin.

Where to begin...

I saw a camper chasing one of the landowner's sheep across the pasture at the 50 Cent Hole one frosty, full moon, March night. I spent the rest of the night in the boat.

I saw twin waterspouts form just yards from my boat, grow to several stories tall, and fly off into the distance.

I saw/felt a bolt of lightning snake down the bridge column at Holiday Island not 30' away. Ears still ring from that.

I watched an eagle preen for 15 minutes, the whole time (he was) crapping in the front of my boat, which was just 25ft under his bluff perch. We had a brief discussion on the State of the Union, I told him what was happening, then he'd crap.

I can't dance like I used to.

My personal favorite? There is a heavily used horse crossing on a popular Missouri trout stream. It is not a good looking run and there is essentially no holding water in the immediate area, so I've always wondered why people fished it so much- until I eventually figured out the reason. Apparently, anglers like to gather immediately below where the horses cross......because the mud they kick up causes a feeding frenzy of scuds, mayfly nymphs, etc. They simply stand there until a few horses cross. When that happens they'll fish it for a couple minutes and then wait for the next party to come through. Not my cup of tea, but it sure seems to work for these fellas. Here I am trying to get as far away from the horse trail as possible for some peace and quiet while others are using them to catch big browns LOL.

One morning early, about 4:30 am in early August, Dad and I headed down to a ramp on one of our favorite creeks to catch shad for the day of fishing. The two track road heads down through a clustering of mostly burnt out and abandoned trailers, but there are a few residents that still live there. As we rounded the last turn to the water we found ourselves behind a young man, probably in his early twenties, waking towards the lake. Dad and I continued on the 200 yds. to the water and launched the boat. Since the shad always gather right around the ramp, Dad and I like this place because you can just bump the boat off the trailer and catch shad in the dark in the morning.

So, there we are just launched the boat and we are floating about 10 feet from the trailer and throwing the net. Here comes the guy down the road. He proceeds to walk straight past us out towards the lake without saying a word. He walks 200 yds out in to the lake until he falls off the flat into the creek channel. All that we can see is his cowboy hat floating and a lot of thrashing. This is in an unpopulated area and even if he were to make it to the other side, it's a straight up bluff on the other bank.

Dad and I are wondering what to do, talking about going and picking him up when a truck pulls down the road to the dirt ramp. With a loud squealing fan belt howling, it proceeds to do a couple donuts and leave. After he leaves, we look back towards the guy in the lake and he is walking/stumbling back towards us. He walks all the way back, still clothed head to toe and wearing a cowboy hat and boots, passes within 15' of us and walks back up the road we all just came in on. All of this happened between 5-5:30 in the morning.

Chris that reminds me of my favorite laugh moment.

Wife and I were driving down a road in Bama heading to visit the boy on base. We see a truck pulled over and two guys sitting in lawn chairs behind it. Thinking they were broke down I stopped to see if they needed a ride or use my cell. As I stopped I see two people in the truck fingers pointing at a high rate of speed and head bobbling. I walked up to the guys to see if they needed help and they both were drinking beer and said "NOPE We are ok just waiting for the wives to stop fighting so we could get on to church"!

Apparently from the lawn chairs and beer this wasn't the first time their wives decided to fight lol.
