Old plug Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 I do not pay much attention to who manufactures the line so much as the size buoyancy of the line. The reason is braid floats and the heavier the test the more buoyant the line becomes. That can effect things like your sensitivity and even the sink rate of fall. I like buck twil jigs in water less than 5 ft because they drop slower an anything deeper I use grubs 90 percent of the time.
merc1997 Bo Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 i have always been one that uses enough equipment to drive a hook through the head of the bass. back before braid, we always fished with 20lb. florescent stren on a 7'6" heavy action flipping rod. now with the advanced technology of braid, i use 50lb. test florescent stren sonic braid. and, yes, i do use the same line even during the day. as for the rod i now use, is a 7"mh action. as for those that are afraid of the amount of float in braid, that is why they make different weights of jigs and sinkers. need a faster fall rate?? add some weight. i know there are many that tout the need to have a stealthy line, but in reality, the a-rig really disproves that theory with heavy wires all over the place. my opinion and experience is you gain much more being able to see your line than you lose by the fish not being able to see it. what little i have used floro, it is quite wirey and like fishing with a spring. it is still stretchy and to me, not that big of an advantage in hook setting. floro does not take a buggy whip type hook set well at all either. it breaks too often. reminds a lot of a line stren had on the market long ago called prime. it had all the same properties as floro claims, supposedly. it still boils down to what makes you happy and you have confidence in, and better fits your style of fishing. my style of fishing has been "rip their heads off" . bo
GNSfishing Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 merc1997 I'll have to agree with you on the use of braid line. I have used mono, FC of many brands for years and I now use the Stren sonic braid fluorescent in a 30 lb which is a 8 lb dia equivalent of mono and/or FC with a 15 lb FC leader of around 5 ft long. This combination has worked great in hook sets and I have that fluorescent glow with a black light at night and it is very visible during the day to be able to see the line twitches of a leary bass pickup. I have tried to go back to the FC and/or mono just looking for what is so good about those lines and I go right back to braid. The line stretch in the FC and mono is like a spring being pulled on a hook set. The braid just does not have that spring feeling on a hook set no matter how much line you have out. I do loosen my drag on the reels for braid because you can rip a hook out on hook set if you set a hook like using the FC or Mono line to accommodate for the stretch they have. Like you said it's up to each one to use whatever floats your boat on what line to use. But I believe if a person tries braid it will make them a believer in the braid line. One test they can try is take 50 ft of each line and tie off one end and then pull each one and feel how much stretch each type of line has over the braid and that will be what has to be taken up on a hook set to stick a hook in a bass's mouth....
Quillback Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 I hear you guys, but I'm very happy fishing floro. I can feel the light bass pickup, I can also feel slack line pickups. And I can see my line quite well, but I'm not a night fisherman. Quality floro tied with a good knot will not break on a hook set, what will get you is if you let it get frayed or kinked.
Members trytofish Posted September 1, 2013 Members Posted September 1, 2013 I use 832 braid on just about everything. (50#). I put on a 17# flouro leader about 2'
Pepe Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I am a complete rookie night fisherman and appreciate the tip about fluorescent braid. I didn't know it even existed. I really like the Nanofil on my spinning rods with light jigs and flukes though I did need to back off my drag a LOT.
GNSfishing Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Yep Stren is making the fluorescent braid in a clear blue and Spiderwire has a lite green which will be seen with a black light. I have been using it and they both do work at night and will be visible during the daylight also. I do watch my line for any twitch which is the only indication of a hit.
ryan Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Really like the vicious 15lb for most water conditions. I'll go 17 if there is any color or I'm fishing trees and lots of brush. That line is really tough and abrasion resistant and you can't beat the prices on tacklewarehouse for the bulk spools
Larry Richards Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 I use a 7'3" ABU Garcia Veritas baitcasting rod with 12lb Berkley 100% fluorocarbon line.I make my own 3/8 and 1/2oz spider jigs and use a Zoom Lil Critter craw trailers.
jeb Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Not all fluorocarbons are created equal. The cheaper ones have less "feel" than the premium lines. Very true. And some are stiffer, some have more line memory, some have more stretch, etc. Just like mono or braid, you need to find the one that suits YOUR needs best. The advantages to Fluro (much less visable to the fish, less stretch and better feel) out weigh any disadvantages for me. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha
