Gavin Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 There are lots of time consuming super strong fishing knots. Might want to learn them if your fishing the salt....to be honest...you don't need it in Missouri, unless your fishing for stripers, cats, or paddlefish....I fish braid a lot and I want to be able to break off at the line leader connection at will...break off, go fetch your plug..retie...The uni-uni is the one to use if you already have a plug tied on the business end. .
Ham Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 The uni to uni is just fine, BUT It is significantly bigger diameter knot. I like the alberto. It isn't much harder to tie and is a longer slimmer knot. I fished it pretty hard the last 8 months and have not had failure issues. I'm not really sure how the alberto is different from an albright, but I digress. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
drew03cmc Posted October 30, 2013 Author Posted October 30, 2013 Interesting discussion fellas. A triple surgeon works well for attaching a fluorocarbon leader to braid? If so, that is good news. It is the only knot you have mentioned that I know how to tie. Andy
Wayne SW/MO Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 I never like the kink in the triple surgeons. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
hoglaw Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 I haven't done a side by side test, but I've found the triple surgeon's to feel week in hand with a braid to floro connection. I can generally pop it with a light sharp jerk, whereas the uni to uni holds up. I've always used a triple surgeon's for tippet to leader connections on a fly line, but that's generally mono to mono or mono to floro. Maybe it makes a difference? I need to learn the alberto though. Even with small diameter lines, the uni to uni causes some issues since I put micro guides on all of my spinning rods. It will still pass a size 4 micro, but it hits it on the way out for sure.
Ham Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 Hoglaw, The first couple of alberto's were tough for me. Light line, heavy wind, and cold fingers BUT after the first couple, it got a lot easier. The only problem I have with tying an alberto now is old eyes and having trouble making sure the line goes thru the last loop the same way it went in. It's been a good knot for me. drew03cmc Posted October 31, 2013 Author Posted October 31, 2013 Thanks Andy. That is very similar to the Albright Andy
Gavin Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 Might give it a try...only took him a minute and a half to tie one.
RSBreth Posted October 31, 2013 Posted October 31, 2013 I think the triple surgeon's is just a little weak (sorry Gavin) but the Alberto is also a pain - I just do the Uni-to Uni most of the time. Although to muddy the water even more I often double the end of the superline with a simple 5 turn spider hitch - so it's much stronger than the regular fluoro or mono leader connection. So much so that I have broken the knot at the lure on 1x Mirage tippet (listed at 14.5-pound test) and not the superline/leader knot on the 12-pound NanoFil/1x Mirage leader. So the line/leader knot is stronger than the line/lure knot, at least when I tie it right.
