Nighthawk Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 My son (the troutdoorsman) and I hunted a quail management area Sunday the 24th. About 30 minutes out of the truck his cocker flushed a covey of about 15 birds. They came up in bunches and we dropped 3 birds out of it. I ended up 2 birds for 3 shots. We pretty much let the singles go for seed. Hope others this year will do the same. Also jumped 2 deer. Always great to spend time with my son. Two Sundays ago his cocker got at least 15 woodcock flushes. We brought home 4. First time I have pulled the trigger on upland birds in almost 30 years. He'll take delivery of a new German Shorthair in about a month. I really have the fever now.
ness Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Nice! Always like to hear stories like that after so many bad ones over the years. It really feels like we're turning the corner a little on quail. John
Terrierman Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 ^^ God I hope so. They were so much a part of what it used to be that was so incredible. Judy and Captain will live forever in the memory banks.
RSBreth Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 There were a few O.K. years for Quail here in SWMO since I've been here - but not many. I do miss the days back in Kansas when I could get off work early around 3 P.M. and go get a limit of Pheasants before dark just a few miles outside of Wichita.
fishinwrench Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 That's awesome. I miss bird hunting as it was in Montgomery, Audrain and Monroe counties during the 70's. By the time I was old enough to buy and train my own dog they were just.....gone.
Quillback Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Glad to hear you got some, I've stomped around with the dog a little in some of the prairie CA's, haven't seen any birds, but there are some out there.
ness Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 I've been out twice this year for pheasant/quail and haven't fired the gun yet. But there are still birds out there -- I hear enough good reports to confirm it. Just gotta work a little harder and longer. Now that opening days are behind us, the 'recreational' hunters are out of the picture and that changes the game a little. Now, if I can just make it through deer season without getting shot... Hope to get up to NW Missouri this weekend. John
