Quillback Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Fished from 08:30 until about 2:00 PM. There was a decent bite for a while, some 20 feet deep off 45 degree chunk rock, and I picked up some bass off of pole timber and cedars near cove mouths in 10-20 FOW. As usual, as I was dragging a Texas rigged green pumpkin tube. I'm dragging it real slow, trying to imitate a crawdad slowly walking across the bottom. Sometime in the rocks you have to hop it a little to avoid the hang-ups, then I'll hop it a few inches and let it drop down to the bottom. I caught a dozen bass today, one nice 4.5 lb. fish, and a good proportion of keepers, I'd say 8 between 15-17". One 16.5" meany., a couple of spots, but most were large mouth. Water temps were 42-43. Weather forecast is calling for an extended period of cold weather, so it may be a while before I get back out on the Rock. Don't you just love it when you find a good bite and then the weather goes down the drain? A couple of fish pics: The 4.5 Another meany, I've been picking up one or two of these dudes every trip for a few weeks now and they've been decent sized for a meany. Seems to be more of them for some reason. This guy has those winter black spots. And a nice chunky 16" LM, typical of what I caught today.
dwiebenga Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Great Job! You guys make me jealous...it is snowing in Kansas City
Pepe Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Any idea what causes those black spots, QB? Thanks for the report.
Champ188 Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Well done indeed, sir. I thought several times about rigging up a tube for Donna and never did. Looks like I should have.
Jacob W Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Making the best out of a tough day, atleast for me anyway. Well done Quillback, those are some nice fish.
Quillback Posted January 2, 2014 Author Posted January 2, 2014 Thanks guys, you know what they say - Every dog has his day - I'll probably get skunked next time out. Danger - Those black spots are a pigmentation thing some bass get during the winter. Harmless to them, why it happens, I don't know.
Fish24/7 Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Quillback nice work with the tube !! A great wintertime bait Crawfish are so lethargic right now they are an easy meal for a bass! Those bigger females take full advantage of that. They know its easier to grab a craw off the bottom right now than it is to chase a shad in open water The big sacs I've been catching on Bull were caught with soft plastics on the bottom too. Good job Q ! Quillback I say screw the weather and go anyway, the best days are the cloudy, shi**y cold days anyway !
fishingaddiction Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Happy New Year QB. Nice report and pic's. Glad you brought 2014 in with a good days fishing. Born to Fish. Forced to Work.
