Just talked to my buddy at the news station they are intrested in the story. This could be very interesting and educational for all parties involed. On a happier note I am headed up to river at the my farm got a call and was told it was loaded with mallards so maybe with this front all the ducks from up north showed up with it and the next week will be epic since this is the coldest weather we have seen in 30 years:):)

We were the second boat at the ramp. The ducks just flew right over our heads all morning.

I figured that was you. Where did you guys hunt? The guy below us in the island area got some shooting in. Was that you?

If this helps for you guys, this is how I do it on Beaver Lake. It is applicable to anyplace I hunt.

#1. Find out the legal distance required to be from a Home, Business, Road or Occupied structure.

.( For instance in Arkansas the legal distance is 150 yards from a residence with a gun or 50 yards with a bow )

#2. Find out the legal requirements for where you hunt such as Private, State or Public Property.

.( If you are on Private property you must have permission )

#3. If there is a legal requirement for distance use google earth to map the area and draw out using the path tool the legal range. Then go verify it with a range finder this satisfies ( due diligence )

#4. Have on you or at your access the legal requirements by the City, County, State and even Federal agency if any on you so if you are contacted you can prove your legal right to be there.

Now here is how the information works. Using Beaver Lake again as an example.

  1. It is Army Corps Property and Hunting is allowed on it during legal season.
  2. It is in Arkansas and thus falls under AGFC guidelines for distance
  3. In this lakes case I do not use a house for my 150 yard rule I use the Army Corps Line plus 150 yards if a house is nearby . By doing this there cannot be any doubt of legal distance.
  4. When contact I have presented the officer with the legal documentation and map. Typically they are cordial and just following up on the call.

That typically protects you as the legal resource user. I am however in the future going to request the office to notify the caller as to the legal activity and to inform them any further calls will result in me filing a hunter harassment complaint. Maybe it’s time to for lake users to be proactive instead of just putting up with these people.

Awsome post and excellent info for everyone to know and have on them.

Well, since I was with my brother I know we were on the correct side of all the laws. I as a law enforcement officer, I would not go disturb someone in the right. Instead, I would inform the person making the call there is nothing we as a law enforcement department can do and I am not going to disturb their hunt. I would also inform the individual or individuals of the law of misusing 911 and it in its self is a crime. Especially if the department receives calls from the known address all the time regarding the same type of situation. The reason they continue to call is the first time they called, the law enforcement did not explain this to them and probably asked or made the hunters move and now the caller thinks they can get this type of action all the time.
