Bitethis Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I used to fly fish a long time ago...when I lived in Montana (can you blame me?) When I moved to the mid-west, I picked up a baitcaster and an eggbeater and have been hooked (Pun intended). Whitebass is probably my favorite fish to catch...and I would like some variet, or an edge (depending on how you look at it). I was wanting any pointers you could provide on Rod weight, line, and flies to use. I was looking at 8.5' 6# rod...and thats as far as I got in assuming I knew what I was doing, lets face it, im not in MT anymore. On a side note, I wouldn't mind trying a fly on LM bass, and trout...fully aware of the different rods needed. Thanks in advance.
duckydoty Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 6 wt would be ok. 7wt probably better. I would think about going with a 9 ft rod and you will probably do better with a 150 to 200 grain sinking line. I fish for them a lot on the James River, Beaver Creek, and Swan Creek in the Spring. Clouser Minnows and small jigs. Do a search on white bass reports and you will get a lot of tips. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Flysmallie Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 If you want to catch a bunch of whites this spring just follow me. Because I will be following duckydoty.

Wayne SW/MO Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 I can't weight. Like ducky said a 6 or 7 weight will work for all 3. I might throw the 5 in the list, depending on what your main target would be. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
marcusearlt Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 You can land whites on rod weights 4 through 8 of many different lengths with a bunch of different lines and flies but I like to target them with a 6 weight 9 foot rod. I fish floating line and when I want to go deeper I loop on a sinking leader, 7 inches per second or so. I use an 8 pound leader with 8 lb flourocarbon tippet. I have the best luck with clousers or anything like a small to medium size minnow imitating fly, even woolly buggers work well too. Whites are a ton of fun on fly rods of all sizes, so go get 'em! Thank you! I was thinking Clouser/Bugger, as it seems standard and looks most like a Wardens rooster tail (which I have great success on) 8# would seem stiff, but I guess you could target Whites and LM on that, eh? I was thinking 6# or 7#. I love catching whites on anything, and have caught my fair share (rooster tails, jigs, a-rigs, lipless crank, plug, pop'r, swimming minnow....the list goes on) Never on a fly, and it just seems like it would be a lot of fun. #rollcastontheriverfromaboat
