Members soxpac Posted January 12, 2014 Members Posted January 12, 2014 This summer I intend to do more frog tossing. I have 65lb braid on my reel. Today's been nice so I was playing around with a pad crasher. Way too light!!! What do you pad fisherman use or do to keep from picking line all day? Jerry Rapp Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 I have an old black Garcia 5000 reel with 50lb vicous braid on a m/h 7 foot rod. It casts any frog I have used like a charm. I will also use as a Carolina rig set up also with a mono leader of course.
Members soxpac Posted January 12, 2014 Author Members Posted January 12, 2014 I'm gonna try lighter braid... I had a brand new spool of pp laying around and just went with it. My setup is a 7ft heavy Falcon Bucoo with a JM Carbonlight 7:1. Seems like a good combo I just can't cast without a nest Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk The gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent in fishing. ~Babylonian Proverb

Though I usually throw spro's but I would think they're similar. I go 50lbs braid. You may have to play with the reel settings a bit. I find I'm the most accurate with the frog leaving it a little loose and thumbing the reel.
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I fished pads a ton last two years with 14lb mono, lots of fish, never broke one off. Never caught anything over 3lb though either...i tried 50lb braid and i dont think you can cast it as far and it also absorbs more water and tends to get a little heavy when your twitching the frog along
John Andrews Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I use 40lb braid never had and issue and it casts like a champ.
Members soxpac Posted January 14, 2014 Author Members Posted January 14, 2014 I'm going to try exactly that... Gonna pick up some 40# Kanzen Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk The gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent in fishing. ~Babylonian Proverb
hoglaw Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I use either 20 or 30 lb braid on my spro frogs and horny toads, and I'm fishing them over and around hydrilla that's almost thick enough to walk on in a private lake full of 5s and 6's with the occasional bigger fish. Well rope is absolutely not necessary in this part of the world.
dtrs5kprs Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 30# Power Pro for us. Lighter braid helps cut through the grass/pads a bit, and casts better. Will use 20# Seguar if only taking a couple of rods for a quick trip, doubles for pitch/flip in that case. The 30# also works on a spinning reel for frogging if you have someone who cannot use a baitcaster. My daughter uses this setup with a 6'6" Falcon 5 power spinning rod and does well.
John Andrews Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I use 40lb braid never had and issue and it casts like a champ. the only reason I use 40 lb braid is I some times toss a zara puppy and have got it hung up. With 40 lb I can pull hard enough to bend the hook and get the lure back. To each there own . If I was ONLY launching frogs, 30lb, would be fine.
