Well I'm weird, but have been using a Loomis GLX 803 (old) since the high water year in 2008. Tip helps when throwing around bushes/cover. Also use the same rod with 8#/10# line for sticks and scrounger/small soft swimbaits.

Did not buy them, they came with my Ranger in 2005, took 3 years to get over using them due to the $.

The Mossyback 803 is pretty close to that stick.

Before that, and still in ponds and small lakes, I used an All Star 6'6" WRM1 worm rod. Also use a Lowrider 6'6" 5 power occasionally, especially for drop baits. Fishes them more like a jig/jig rod.

I throw a spinnerbait a lot and my two designated rods for doing so are identical 6-9 Duckett Micro Magics in MH. Tip is plenty fast so that you don't feel like you're throwing a broomstick and to have some give when a fish takes the bait. But there's also plenty of backbone to set the hook and muscle a fish out of heavy cover. Probably the best spinnerbait rods I've ever had.

I was wandering if you were going to talk about the duckett rod, i have been looking at the new quantum tour exo, probably because they are new and they get a lot of advertisement but i don't know of the many quality brands that you guys do so that is why i ask, i was told of the g-loomis and will check into this duckett rod. I want to say that i really appreciate all the tips and ADVICE i get from you guys, GOOD FISHIN

I'd bet the overall feel and tip on Champ's Ducketts and the GLX are pretty close. And you will be able to buy three Ducketts for the same money. Can't say I would buy a Loomis as they are currently made, except perhaps the Mossyback, just an example of the tip and feel I prefer.

I don't use the same rod for a 3/8 that I do for something as heavy as a 3/4. I use Gloomis 843c for the lighter and 844c for the heavier.

I rarely throw a 3/4-ounce spinnerbait but when I do, I put it on one of my 7-0 or 7-3 MH rods that I normally use for a football jig. Most of my warm-water spinnerbaiting is done with a 1/4-ounce or 3/8-ounce bait, both of which I throw on the 6-9 rods. I do throw a half-ounce bait in late fall and early spring, which I can do with either a 6-9 or 7-0 rod.
96CHAMP, I will say that I'm not sure I would drop $400 on a Loomis GLX to throw a spinnerbait. The reason I say so is that a spinnerbait is a reaction-bite bait and if you get too high tech with your rod, it can cost you fish. Yes, you need to feel the bite but a slight delay lets the fish actually get the lure in their mouth before you bust his chops. That Quantum rod you're looking at would probably do you a very good job.

My final recommendation before I shut my piehole is your reel. I see a lot of guys put 7:1 reels on their spinnerbait rods and end up fishing their baits too fast. I'd strongly recommend a 6:4:1 or 6:3:1 ratio, which is fast enough to burn a bait on the days you need to but slow enough to finesse it a bit on days they're being fussy.

Agreed. Mine were "free" from Ranger.

Also agree on the reel. Something in the 6:1 range at most. I still use 5:1 Curados and Lews (5.4:1 exactly I think), and would not hesitate to break out one of my old 4600's and run it on the 4.7:1 reel.

I do throw a heavy bait, appx 1/2oz hidden weight type most of the time and up, but with small blades #3/#4 or so. Sort of trades off the weight and pull. If I need to use a 3/4 or 1oz for wind I bump up to the All Star or Falcon.

Hope it didn't sound like I was criticizing your rod choice, dtrs5kprs. I understood that yours were a perk from Ranger. Pretty nice deal, for sure, and I'd darn sure be using those rods for something or another.

I will say that while fishing sure sucks at the moment, lots of good info gets passed around this time of year. This forum is just unheard of in that respect. We are blessed.

I toss my spinnerbaits on a 6' 6" MH/F St Croix LTB. Love how well I can feel the blades spinning with that rod, makes feeling those lift bites, when they hit from behind and the bait just gets a little easier to retrieve, a whole lot easier. I'm mostly fishing baits 1/4-1/2 ounce on it though. On the rare occasion I fish a blade over 1/2oz I fish it on a 7' 1" MH/XF St Croix LTB.
