Ham Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 WOW DC, I haven't had those issues. I'm fishing 6lb, 8lb, and 10 lb Nanofil depending on my application. I only fish it on spinning. I can't remember ever breaking it, but I'm still in my first year of use. I'd be curious about what lb Nanofil you were using and how similar our knots were. the Alberto isn't much different from an Albright if different at all. gabe Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 I like 10lb braid with 6-8 ft. fluro leader. I normally use Seaguar 8 lb for the leader. Works great.
Sac River Jim Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 i use 6lb. McCoy fluoro 100 in the winter because i can get a 1/32 jig deeper and faster when im fishing structure for crappie. the rest of the time i use the McCoy clear blue in either 4 or 6lb test. I like their co-polymer line because i think its got good abrasion resistance and very little spool memory, i seem to get longer smoother casts with it when swimming 1/16th and 1/8 oz grubs and jigs with very little stretch on the hook set. my knots hold good too. i use either 17lb clear blue or the 20lb super spectre braid on my bait casters. Champ is right the BPS Excel is pretty hard to beat.ive bought a couple reels pre spooled with it and had no complaints at all. im hearing good things about the nanofil i think i'll ck into it this spring. thnx for all the input everyone i think ive learned a couple things especially about what knots to use when tying on a leader.
Mitch f Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I guess I am lazy and in the minority...I like a co-poly for my spinning gear. Yozuri Hybrid to be specific. I second this........I did the braid/leader thing for a few years and have convinced myself that it's not worth the time and effort of tying 3 knots (double uni plus one) whenever you break off. I might be convinced again someday that it's worth the trouble with a spinning rod set up. I suppose if I was finesse fishing very deep water in a lake with a spinning rod, and I thought line stretch would hamper the sensitivity, I might be convinced to do it again. But since I mostly fish rivers and rarely deeper than 15 ft deep , I don't see the need for it. Like DClose said maybe I had my drag too tight to begin with. Having said that, I broke off too many fish with fluoro by itself, even without having a braid main line. I think I would rather use a hybrid line like Yozuri and be done with it .My fishing time is too precious now with a family with young kids that I want to get as many casts in a day as possible. I hate even taking the time to eat a sandwich, but that's just me! "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
inshore Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I started using 10# hi-vis yellow power pro braid when I moved to fla. 10 years ago. I only fished in salt water never put a line in fresh water for ten years. moved back to sprfld in 2010 and have continued to use the same set up on my spinning reels. some things I have learned is 1 don't fill your spool as full as you would with mono. 2 use 1/2 or less drag setting as you would with mono. I use fluro leader not fluro line as my tippet. trout leader is 100% fluro not coated. it is usually a smaller diameter and much tougher than fluro line. I always attach with a uni knot 6 turns on both lines make sure the turns don't have an overlap. I have found that I seldom lose a fish because of line or knot breaking. if you hang up and have to break a steady pull will break at the bait not at the connection. to ensure this I attach uni knot to bait with less turns. also I run one spinning reel with 6lb power pro and will use for finesse fishing.
Sac River Jim Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 im the same way Mitch alot of times my can of beenie weenies comes home unopened
Ham Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I want to get as many casts in a day as possible. I hate even taking the time to eat a sandwich, but that's just me! I will sometimes forget to eat because I'm locked in to whatever is going on, but I'll feel better and fish better if I'll take 15 minutes to eat somewhere near the middle of the day. Maybe I'm getting "better" about this whole fishing obsession thing. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Old plug Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I have seen braid lines fray and the same is true fireline. I prefer to be able to check my line to see if it has frayed. this is done by running myfinger down the last 5 or 6 ft. somebody on here was saying he had was using 65 lb test braid with a 15 lb test leader and he had to cut the line because it was hung up and he could not get it loose and was afraid of breaking his rod. Well what do you expect. expect. Why do you have to use 65 lb test anyway. Ham mentioned he uses a leader because it is cheaper to to replace lures than a lot of line. Well when I see people on here paying lures that cost $ 15 bucks and up it does not look cheap to me to loose those things. I am in the same boat with blasabee and champ. I buy the Pro bass shop mono they do and I fish about 250+ days a year and it works fine. It might not be cool but it works very well. I have caught fish to 49 lbs on 10 or 12 lb test. Iforget what it was.

Iforget what it was. What? I gave several reasons for using leader. I'm pretty sure I never said it was cheaper to replaces lures than line. I want to be able to break off WHEN i NEED TO DO SO. IF I'm using 20 lb braid fishing from my kayak and get hung up, current sweeping the boat along might become a big problem. I'm pretty sure I can break 6 or 8 pound leader material in a hurry IF need be, but 20 lb braid isn't going to break. I ONLY use 20 lb because it had the line diameter I'm comfortable using VERY CLOSE TO 8 LB MONO it never was about needing heavier line to subdue the fish. I don't think I'm as old as you are, but I'm pretty sure most of us have caught fish heavier then the pound test we are using. The cost savings comes in when you aren't using expensive Nanofil or braid on basic lure changes or to re-tie. I don't know anyone that is fishing any type or brand or line to be cool. I love te Nanofil because of the easy hooksets from a great distance AND it's enhanced casting distance over braid. I have lures that cost > 15 dollars, but they are the exception rather than the rule. I don't go out of my way to lose any lure and I'd certainly try not to lose the more expensive ones. hknfsh Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Just got back from BPS and looked at all the fishing line everybody is talking about. To those of you using Nanofil.......it is an interesting looking line but does it just stand out in the water ? I mean...looks like it wouldn't " blend in " with the water/color. Unless there are different shades....I was looking at the whiter color.
