96 CHAMP Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 just thought i would throw a topic out there, where does your fishing heritage originate?? mine originates from my grandma and grandpa who owned a 80 acre farm between perryville and silver lake mo. he had about a 3 acre lake he built stocked with channel cat, hybrid bluegill and bass along with 2 smaller ponds, and a creek that run by part of the property, grandma had us out there when we were old enough to hold a zebco 202 in our hands, man do i miss em and those days
Hunter53 Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Ah the old zebco 202; I remember it well. Caught a 37in pike on one using a white beetle spin when I was little enough that the pike was dang near as long as me. LOL Those little white beetle spins seem to catch about anything! Grew up fishing the missouri river and farm ponds for catfish mostly and then my parents got permission to fish a pond with bass in it. Been hooked on bass fishing ever since. I was lucky in the fact that my parents really liked to hunt and fish. No lie; we went fishing dang near EVERY night until hunting seasons started. Then it was hunting most every night. God rest their souls; I truly am grateful and blessed for my parents bringing me up the way did!!
96 CHAMP Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 having grand parents and parents that exposed us to the elements of the outdoors makes us very fortunate, i had a dream the other night grandma and i were down at the lake fishing, i remember throwing the black jitterbug along the banks of the lake and ponds at dusk and getting riled up when those bigmouths attacked it
Hunter53 Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 The other thing Dad and I did for about an hour and a half every night at the lake was work on my baseball game. He would hit fly balls and ground balls for a while. Then I would try to find a straight stick and a pile of rocks. Dad would stand behind a tree and pitch me rocks to hit. Made a baseball pretty easy to hit after doing that! Makes a person realize there is no 'bad hop' on a baseball diamond after fielding balls on that lake ground. Man do I REALLY miss those days!!! You sure stirred up a lot of dust here with this thread it seems.
96 CHAMP Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 well if this topic made you reminisce of your past as a child and put a smile on your face then the dust is stirred up in NEBRASKA tonight!! lol
Hunter53 Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Yepper I have a big ol thinking back upon those days!! Thanks for starting this thread. It will be pretty neat hearing how everyone got their start into fishing.
jmes Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 My Grandpa got me started when I was able to walk, He started me fishing with crawdad's in the small rivers an,d farms ponds also He taught me to always enjoy the outdoors, hunting, fishing and he loved to go mushroom hunting.
Sore Thumbs Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Man you guys are lucky. I went fishing only a handful of times when I was younger. Did go hunting quite a bit. I took up fishing on my own about 6 years ago. I'm pretty much self taught with guidance from places like this and some people I have met along the way. When I need any advice I will talk to Chris Johnson. He used to be at Hook, line and Sinker. Great guy. I have a lot to make up.
dwiebenga Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 My dad started me out fishing at Truman for crappie, and then I would spend hours on my grandparents' dock on Table Rock. I would always go down to TRL in the summer for a week. My grandfather, who was in pretty poor health, taught me as much as he could from his recliner chair. I could listen to him talk for hours about how to fish Table Rock. My mom and Grandmother still share great stories about my grandfather fishing, My Dad took me on a canoe trip to Canada for the first time in 1993. We have now been to Minnesota or Canada a dozen times. I also use to spend a month in Illinois with my other Grandmother. She would take me out to the local ponds or my Aunt and Uncle's private lake. I still think about those times, and I can't wait to start taking my kids on trips.
Guest Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 My dad started me in tournament bass fishing at age 7. I learned to use a baitcaster & caught a 6 pounder on it that same year. The following year, he taught me to run a trolling motor & load the boat on the trailer. I won my first bass club tournament at age 15 on Sardis in north Mississippi. I moved to the Ozarks in 2000. Adjusting to clear water and deep lakes has been a long learning curve. We still fish together as he is nearing 70.
