Members onemgepi Posted March 5, 2014 Author Members Posted March 5, 2014 I couldn't find any new info on the Johnson 25/20 in the quick search I just did. Do you have an idea of the approx cost? The Evinrude site did say that a 25hp prop weighed 160lbs, a 20hp Honda/yamaha weighs in neighborhood of 105lbs. Do you think the increased weight is worth it? I like the idea of being able to handle skinny water as that is where I am use to fishing, but everyone seems to lean toward props to fish my area. As for the diff types of fishing to learn, I want a general knowledge of everything artificial. We catch/release and this is strictly for fun. At this point I do not fly fish but it's on the agenda (my 11 Year old is dying to learn to fly fish).
Members Whiteriver Posted March 5, 2014 Members Posted March 5, 2014 Buy the 20hp Yamaha----you won't find a better set up for the money. If the water is so shallow the 20 Yamaha won't go, just get out an walk or pull it over a shoal. The 20 hp is the lightest of the motors and very quite----I like quite on the river---everyone likes quite on the river..
hoglaw Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 I have a jet, but prefer a prop on the little red for the same reasons everyone else mentioned - that grass. The other issue with the Little Red is, when the water is really low like it was this past fall, a jet won't get you many places that a prop can't get to. The Little Red is full of hard, sharp bedrock that will eat a boat alive. It's not the softer gravel that's present on a lot of spots on the White where you can slide a little if you really need to. I absolutely love my jet and I love the peace of mind that comes with knowing I'm not going to beat it to death in skinny water. But I think it's a much bigger advantage on the White than it is the LR.
marcusearlt Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I have been on the Little Red in bass boats, Supreme style boats, and johns, both jets and props in all flow levels. For me personally, I am a fan of the jet every time. Right now I run a Merc 25 with a jet foot on a semi-v 16ft john. I fished the Little Red for years with a prop and, except in high high water, always had a worry in the back of my mind of when I was going to bang the prop on something get slung forward to the floor of the boat. If you have ever been in a boat with a prop when you hit something hard you know the motor shoots right up in a locked and raised position with the rpm often times roaring loudly right before the motor dies. After all that, especially in good flow, you boat starts to turn, it catches water and turns faster and pretty soon your headed wherever the river takes you. You still have to lean over the back of the boat to lower the motor down, start it and regain control of the boat. Trust me, when this happens a few times you will want a jet. With the jet I can rest easier knowing that there is a good clearance between me and the river. That reduction in worry and increase in assurance makes a huge difference with me in how I feel and how I operate a boat on the Little Red. Yes you will clean a jet some but it is worth it when you cruise up shoal after shoal to places you've never been in a boat in low water before, places most prop guys aren't going to be. For maintenance you have to grease the jet pump every ten hours of operation which takes only a couple minutes. The Little Red is a prime example of a river that creates the need for a jet. Say goodbye to skegs and $100+ propellers. Get the jet, it will change your life. "If people don't occasionally walk away from you shaking their heads, you're doing something wrong." John Gierach
Members CartneyAccess Posted March 16, 2014 Members Posted March 16, 2014 I run a 20 merc 4stroke it will run 22mph with just me in it. As I said I don't like the shallow water drive but I fixed that. Other than that it's a fine motor. I have never had a jet but from being on the river with them. They are terrible loud and noisey.
Ham Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Yep, jets are Godawful loud. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Members Dane Pruitt Posted March 22, 2014 Members Posted March 22, 2014 Look at the 20hp Nissan. My brother bought one off Internet shipped to his door. Electric start runs good him in a 1542 WE he can keep up with my 25hp 2 stroke Yamaha on a riveted Lowe with 2 people. I would get prop with Jackplate.
Members onemgepi Posted March 26, 2014 Author Members Posted March 26, 2014 Ok guys, I went motor shopping today. I have ruled out a jet, but leaning toward yamaha because I can have it worked on (if needed) within 5 miles of my house. Now my big question is: 20 or 25 hp? Price not an issue because they are only $200 apart. My big question is the 20hp weighs 110 lbs, the 25 hp weighs 168 lbs. Is the extra 5 hp worth the extra 60 lbs? I am a big guy and 90% of the time I will be with my 11 year old (occasionally other adults) I won't usually be carrying lots of gear (poles, tackle etc).
Terrierman Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I'm a big guy too and fish with other big guys. 15 HP Yamaha pushes the 48" Shawnee fine. I would get the 20.
