Feathers and Fins Posted March 3, 2014 Share Posted March 3, 2014 Lord I spent way to much money on cranks at one time then I realized lures were designed to catch fishermen more than fish, so I started thinking about what I caught my fish on not what the stores caught me on and it came to that formula. Then I started looking at cost vs works and the two baits that stood out were the Rapala SR and the Flicker Shad, Flickers run 3.99 to 4.99 per bait so I can afford a lot of them and a loss of one is not so hard on the pocket book... The SR baits sometime produce better so I always keep some on hand. Same thing with plastics, I have learned Keitech swing impact is a deadly plastic I can fish in a variety of ways eliminating the tonnage of plastics I use to carry. It all comes back to my theory of finding what works where I fish most. Well that and not buying a lure because it looks pretty or is the newest thing or some pro says its great. Hell what works for a pro on one lake and wins him the trophy might well put him in last place the next tournament. I really want to be more organized, and not tote around all the crap I never use, but might use...someday. I always said I lost more lures in my garage and boat storage compartments than I ever lost in the lake. Mainly due to my own negligence. I can't calculate how many jig hooks, crank bait hooks have rusted in my boxes over the years. I used to lose the skirts off jigs and spinnerbaits, but I started put a new tie on the skirts. Those flimsy rubber bands holding the skirts are good for about a year. If your out on the rare occasion when the fish seem to be biting really good, try one of those baits you seldom throw to reconfirm your opinion of said lure. A few years ago when I was fishing in a bass club tournament, one of the fellow members came in with a big sack of bass. He said he thought he would just try some old baits that were pretty much out of favor and to his surprise he caught all his fish on a jig and eel and a mudbug. There is always a new color combination someone wants me to make. I tie them and I make a few for my own use because they look so good. I have about 60 color combinations in my tackle boxes. I don't know if it ever will end. At least I have some that i know the fish have never seen before. One guy came in from break at work with a cheetos package that was orange, yellow and red. Old plug Posted March 4, 2014 Share Posted March 4, 2014 I a, mostly a jog and worm fisherman. Anything you can do with them I have maybe been there and done that. Sure takes a lot less room than all these crank baits. that not to say i do not have a awful lot of weights hooks and worms.
