mjk86 I don't have much confidence with jerkbaits in colored water. A jerkbait doesn't have to be fished as a jerkbait and I wouldn't really consider one a jerkbait unless it's fish that way. Retrieved steady or with very brief pauses just makes them a minnow lure in my book.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I sort of throw the same old colors that resemble shad colors till I am sure its not working. my theory on that is the shad do bot change color. but in off. color water I think scent becomes more important and maybe the brighter stuff makes up for that. i do not throw them much either. right now here you got to cover a lot of water. They call it the milk run and it can eat up 20 gals of fuel in no time. I was going to fish deep today for awhile with a spoon. I found a good sized bunch staged off a point at 25 ft. they were gone today. then the wind blew me off.

I'll toss them all year round. Depth and cadence are usually more important than color but I tend to stick to some proven minnow colors or clown in clear water, chartreuse shad and flashier baits in stained. Give a shallow running suspender a go if you are having trouble hooking up on a fluke.

Old Plug, do you realize this post is specifically directed at SmallMouth Bass? I am confused based on your normal posts and where you fish. I am surprised you catch any Smallies there.

Ah, heck, we don't need to discriminate against those dead water green fish anglers :)

Jerkbaits in dirtier water...yes, I like them best in clear water, but they can be great in water with three or four feet of visibility. Any dirtier than that and I might go to the bigger sizes. As far as color is concerned, I stay with minnow type colors no matter what the clarity is, but may fish only the most opaque color patterns in water of less than 4 feet visibility.

I like the LC pointer 78, best all around color I have found is American shad. As the water warms a bit I start throwing un weighted rogues in bright colors with a coachdog pattern.

As an update, I caught five greenfish yesterday on the French Pearl OB MB X-80 TD yesterday on the lake. I hadn't had a take on a jerk before and wasn't sure what to expect. They hit it like a worm strike. It is awesome.
