Hazbin Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 This really difficult to understand. My wife's folks built a cabin there on Melton's Peninsula in the early 60's and we were really familiar with that area and to me if you were on the South side you would run aground on the flat going out and the bridge going up and on the North side you would be practically on the bluff.
Wayne SW/MO Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Anytime you get close to the bank on TR you risk hitting something. Had they been lined up to go under the bridge they would have been alright. I can see why there aren't buoys because both piers are at the end of projections into the lake. There's no real way to see where the land ends even without the buoys. They had probably run up through there many times and not realized how close they were to hitting something. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I was thinking the same thing. It sounds like they hit the one on the shallow side but i am not 100% on that.
WettinLine Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 They need to get rid of the pillars. that is why they or going to hold LOZ so low this year. They are suppose to destroy the old hwy 5 pillars to 6 ft below the current water level. Yeah great idea pull out fish habitat, maybe they should drain lake fork and remove the standing timber? Remember these lake are dangerous, and recreation is secondard, these lake are meant for flood control. I don't want a single penny of my tax dollar spent on removing obstructions or just pull the timber and give the whole lake to the pleasure boaters.
techo Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Great! Hope to be in Aunts tomorrow! Miss you guys. More reasons to just stay in Aunt's Creek. How are things T? Tim Carpenter
Members fishEd Posted March 20, 2014 Members Posted March 20, 2014 I spend a lot of time in that part of the lake, as I have family with a cabin right above Flat Creek Resort. It's spooky how many times I've seen ski boats with kids being pulled on a tube make a turn right next to that pillar on the south side. When the water level is up, it can be hidden just underneath the surface. If you are not familiar with the area, you'd never know it was there. A few years back I took the dog out on the kayak to walk along the old road bed. Had a couple good ol' boys that didn't realize it was that shallow (even though I was walking on it) who did a Dukes of Hazard jump right over the roadbed. Luckily they were ok, picked themselves up off the bottom of the boat, and headed on down the river. Certainly gave me a good laugh. Really hope the corp does something to mark this better for people not familiar with it. As Flat Creek Resort and James River Marina draw more new people to the area, it's likely to happen more often.
WettinLine Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Ive seen skiers up there too, fools! If you mark every dangerous object it will look like Walmarts sale isle. Just remember there are warnings on cigarettes too but I still see smokers.

Well, since you don't even pay MO taxes, would it be ok with you if they put a 50$ buoy on top of it to mark it a hazard or is that going to spin you up in another rant?
GNSfishing Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Put all kinds of buoys, markers or flashing lights on them but if you are not watching where you are going then all is in vain. Or lets say no matter what you do someone will hit them if they get that close to the shore line.
WettinLine Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Im with GNS, it will never work. How about the false sense of security that a marker provides. Since I see a marker on that bridge pillar that must be the only hazard in the area, that is not true.
