drew03cmc Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 Wharfrat, look at Kokanee casting rods. They are routinely light power and longer. Andy
Gavin Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 It is pretty easy to assemble and wrap a rod. Mudhole and Angler's Workshop carry everything you need. I've shortened a few blanks before...but you never know how you can modify it until you get the blank in hand to examine the taper. All my spin rods are 6' and Medium Light, or Medium for what ever it is worth...I use the Medum Light for jerkbaits mostly...The medium is for jigs.
Sac River Jim Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 i found an okuma crappie high performance im8 graphite spinning rod in 5' light action for 64.99 and they have it in casting models too. http://www.okumafishing.com/product/view/rods/freshwater/crappie-high-performance
Old plug Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Riverdog ---- I am wondering if you went and looked at the Ugly Stiik PRO LITE that 5 ft long one piece rod. they are hard to find and around here some models of that series just fly off the racks, So do not wait to long to to look at them at your local Walmart. As a example there were about 1/2 dozen 7 ft of the 7 ft casting rods on the rack at Walmart in Osage Beach.we were there on a Monday and I thought i might buy another one but would wait till we made our usual the next Monday. As it turned out we had to go over the following Friday. so I intended on buying one then. They were all gone.

rps Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Thanks for all the links guys. I really like the 5'3" fenwick. But I also would love to start building my own rods. Is there a way to cut down an after market rod and put my own handle and reelseat on it? I fished the Ned rig for several hours yesterday and the day before. My only spinning rod/reel (I am a hardcore casting reel type) really stunk up the place while trying to throw the Ned. Rereading this thread and that experience triggered me into action. I just made this order from Mudhole: BSV3XG-20 1 Pacific Bay Black Spin/Cast Guide BSV3XG 20MM 1.63 BSV3XG-10 1 Pacific Bay Black Spin/Cast Guide BSV3XG 10MM 0.88 BSV3XG-6 1 Pacific Bay Black Spin/Cast Guide BSV3XG 06MM 0.73 BSV3XG-4 5 Pacific Bay Black Micro Guide BSV3XG 04MM 0.70 BFM3XT-4-5 1 Pacific Bay Black Micro Top BFM3XT #4(5) 1.69 TXT12-980-R 1 Texalium Tubing 12" - .980 ID/Red 21.98 GH-950 BC 1 EVA Butt Cap for 0.980 Texalium Tubes 2.95 GH-980 TR 1 Trim/Winding Check for 0.980 Texalium Tubes 1.25 CS722-MHX 1 MHX Cast/Spin 6'0" 1pc. 6-12lb B0.452 T5 Slate 44.00 AJ454-B 1 PAC BAY SINGLE FOOT FLAT WIRE HOOK KEEPER BLACK 0.60 TMO-4 1 Thread Master ONE - One-Part Rod Finish - 4oz kit 11.40 RNS-A-749 1 ProWrap Nylon 100yd Size A - 749 Brown 2.55 With shipping the total was 116.43. Based on past experience with MHX blanks and home made rods, I expect the result to fish like something that costs 200 to 300 dollars. Do note that if you used less expensive parts (I splurged with the tube for a Tennessee handle) and waited for a free shipping event, the total cost would plunge below $100.

Old plug Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 river dog here is what you do if you find one. turn the rod upside down ( guides up) then place the tip in the floor at about a 45 degre angle and press down on the handle watch how the rod bends is the up end bends easy and pretty fast then the lower part becomes stiffer fast as you press down the rod is a fast. tip rod with most of the fighting power in the in the lower part of the rod. feel the ben and decide it that will manage for your fishing. I look at one and I though was a fast top and it is made with good quality cork grip handle All of them in that series are.

RPS...are you going TN handle with the tubing? Did you get arbors to fit inside the tube? Have now built two rods for the little rig, both with TN handles and love them. They are "fat" cork TN handes, just barely turned down from the full size rings. Helps with some of the numbness I get from squeezing smaller handles. Ned likes the shorter rods. Apparently that is how they all learned to do it back in the 60's. I like them longer, built a 7'6" and a 6'9". Also good drop shot/grub rods.
