ness Posted March 24, 2014 Author Posted March 24, 2014 I started my onions from seed the last couple years. Started them inside In late January. Seed Savers Exchange is where I got mine. John
Njardar Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 We have thee flats with multiple varieties of tomatoes and peppers waiting to go to the greenhouse when we will transplant to peat pots. I need to start the cuc and broccoli seeds this week. Our last day of frost is later than yours, so we try to get some big transplants ready to go when the soil warms up.
ness Posted March 25, 2014 Author Posted March 25, 2014 Remember the snow May2?I put trash bags over my tomato cages and only lost 1-2 plants.Im not gonna worry about it this year and im just gonna wait.I dont like buying my plants from the stores Yeah, I remember the snow. We got about an inch here. We also had a hard freeze 4/22 but I had everything covered up. The way this winter has been I wouldn't be surprised if it's late again. John
Don Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I have raised beds and several ground plots. Everybody is late this year. I never do "under the lights" stuff. Early stuff is getting planted Tuesday.....'bout time eh? Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
ness Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 I have raised beds and several ground plots. Everybody is late this year. I never do "under the lights" stuff. Early stuff is getting planted Tuesday.....'bout time eh? Glad to know I'm not the only one running late. Just got peas, carrots, spinach, radishes and beets in the ground Sunday. We had 70+ degrees yesterday and today. Really windy, so I didn't bring anything out to harden off. Sposta be a fairly nice week, though still cooler than normal. John
Old plug Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 I do not do veggies but I wanted to ask if any of you have deer problems. Last year I grew rosemary plants (Not a easy task in a shade garden) around the garden in pots. I would clip them not and then and dice the clipping up small and scatter them all around the garden. They went next door and chewed up a bunch of plants. But walked right by mine without touching anything. Just wondering if anyone e se has had this experience
ness Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 I'm pretty deep in town. They've been in the neighborhood, but I've never had a problem. My uncle lives a couple miles away and butts up against some undeveloped/wooded land. He had major problems with deer starting a few years ago and ended up putting 8-foot high wire fence around his garden. John
Old plug Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 I might be in the same boat with your uncle this year. Lot of young deer out. We counted 18 in one group about 1/2 mile up the road. Will have to start all over with 410 education plan it appears.
Blazerman Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 ok i will ask, what is your 410 education plan. i am guessing you are shooting at them with a 410?
Old plug Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Number 9 shot in a 410 ga shotgun at 2o yards or so in the rump area. It does not really hurt them but it delivers a real good sting plus the sound of the gun makes for a scary memory . I have seen them the next day and not even limping. Sometimes you got to shoot 1/2 dozen before they all give up totally. It will last till you get a bunch of yearlings then they have to be educated as well. If we seen 18 that close were in for it. Lot of people use pellet rifles. I do not use mine because my pellet rifle has close to 1300 lbs muzzle velocity. That is more than the 410 shotgun. It does bot have the loud noise either that contributes to the effect. Something I have wanted to try for sometime is a paint ball gun. I have been told they just hate that stuff.
