Mitch f Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Is common core used in other countries that are ahead of us in math, reading, and science? "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Justin Spencer Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Is common core used in other countries that are ahead of us in math, reading, and science?Good question, I doubt it though, we could never admit other countries teach better than us, so we probably developed it. Feathers and Fins Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Absolutely not. I have a good friend who is a teacher in Japan and we have discussed this at length and actually sent him a common core 10th grade assignment for his students to do. They all did the work and did a theses on what they believed of it. He said most of them concluded that the students were being taught to think differently than what is expected and accepted in the rest of the world and in the business environment and are being set-up for failure upon graduation. You must understand the Japanese school system is more designed around lectures as well as the basic skills and heavy classes on vocation and technology, where as the American system is based more on learning the basic skills with some advanced classes but not until college do most students start being trained for the work force. Also the cost is much different, in japan many families pay to send their kids to a private school to increase their learning and in no way put up with the crap our poor teachers have to deal with. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Smalliebigs Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 I going to LOZ Friday with a great friend to fish Jerk baits, A-rigs, wiggle warts and Mitch's Craw jig.....I'm so excited i can hardly control my happiness. The last thing I need to read is an indoctrinated opinion about Common Core from someoene in the industry......go fishing and post a report!!!!!!!!!! take some pics and post those.....this thread is garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for a fishing forum If you value education as a parent and stay involved with your kids education, your kids will do just fine. If you instill work ethic and teach your kids to value their education they will be fine........Common core is not needed......better and more involved parents are needed. We have a lot of kids doing bad because their parents are POS....the kids who have parents that are involved and value education excel......try to deny that and you are full of shiot. Horrible parenting is what's wrong with our kids education. GO Fish
Feathers and Fins Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 this thread is garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for a fishing forum Actually I would say more than a fishing forum looking over all the choices of on the list. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Justin Spencer Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 You are right smallie, horrible parenting is what is wrong so we have to find a way for these kids to learn on their own, 5 minutes ago my son taught me how to do long multiplication a totally differnt way than I have ever done it. I still like my way, but this way is easier to understand. As for this thread I enjoy hearing people's opinions on real life situations so if you don't like it go check out the crappie moving to the shallows threads and stay out of these deeper subjects. rps Posted March 26, 2014 Author Posted March 26, 2014 Smalliebigs, I am sure your children will have the best. Most of my students do not have an involved parent. This thread discusses matters important to them as well as to your children. BTW, I posted about fishing with pictures yesterday. Did you? Many years ago my wife and I had a friend in Tulsa. Vicky Williams was single and blunt. She told us most guys were just people with ears. She did not use the word people.
gotmuddy Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 I thankfully know absolutely nothing about common core, my son is 2 and we are going to home school him. No matter what kind of trendy teaching practices we have in the US, the decline of family values will drag our test scores down. There is just no way around it. We need to quit trying to get every high school kid "ready for college" because in all honesty less than half should actually be there. We need to focus on teaching kids how to actually get along in life, I mean for gods sake ask a cashier to make change without a computer and see what happens! everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

GM, I hear you and most other countries in the world hear you. However, as long as we are here in the US, where every child is supposed to be career or college ready by the time they finish high school, do this. Teach math in the early years with an abacus. It teaches math facts and number sense and prepares the kids for set theory. Teach literacy with the the constant "why?" Why did he think that. Why did she do that?
Feathers and Fins Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 My first Boss God bless him and me he be with the Good Lord was,,, well there is no words for him. He saw I loved construction with a passion and saw to it that I learned a career and mastered each trade I could. He put me with 40 year journeymen, masters of their trades and Sheetrock, Framers, Painters, Roofers and Plumbers. On slow days he would have me go out with his Estimators or sit in with the Architects and Engineers. The man required I maintain my grades and also take advanced courses to get certifications In Fire, Flood and Water Damage and restoration. What was the point of all that? Simple there is no school K-University that can prepare you for the real world only hands on experience and knowledge skills passed down from mentors' can do that. Our schools can give you the basic skills to perform the most remedial of calculations and writing skills but they cannot give you a career or trade skill under the current mentality of teaching. I really started reading up on other nations last night after Mitch's question and it seems the majority of other countries have heavy vocational training in school, they are less concerned about the "electives/sports/clubs" and more concerned about life skills RRR and Vocational preparation. I have no doubt if it wasn't for my boss and his requiring my grades stay up and putting me with skilled craftsmen I wouldn't be where I am now. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
