Members Simonthegolfer Posted March 27, 2014 Members Posted March 27, 2014 Hey guys, I'd like you're opinion on owning a boat in college. I'm a junior soon to be senior in highschool and my 3 best friends are seniors, they are attending Arkansas Tech in the fall. I plan to go there also when I graduate. Anyways we are all avid fisherman and with Lake Dardnelle only minutes away from the school it would be torture to not be able to fish it. So do y'all think buying and owning a boat during college would be a good idea? We would probably split the cost 4 ways between us. And also the cost for storage I think it's like 35 a month (split 4 ways) at a U Haul type place for boat storage down there. Thoughts? Someone who owned a boat in college? Another (free) solution to storage maybe?
fishinwrench Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I'm not a big fan of the "partnership " arrangement, somebody always gets screwed. If it's a fresh boat then there is going to be insurance, maintenance, storage, and grooming (upkeep). It's inevitable that one of you is going to get cranky at one point or another......and there's no room for that in your "fishing life". If it's a beater/fixer-upper then there is going to be parts and tech bills.....and we ain't exactly cheap. Just consider all things before jumping in. Fishing needs to stay enjoyable and be as stress free as possible.
Flysmallie Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I agree with Wrench. No matter how good of friends you were in high school things will change if you put something like this in the middle of it. If you really want it make sure you can afford to do it on your own. Or buy some kayaks and fish out of those.
Dutch Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Several schools won't allow freshmen to have automobiles. There is a good reason for that. I think you would be better off if you didn't get into a boat for the first year so you will have time to learn how to study for college classes. If things go well then the boat idea can be looked at. JMO.

Don't get a credit card either, makes it to easy to buy things like a boat, or way too much Mexican food. ness Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 I would definitely not recommend a partnership deal. Being buds in high school is way different than being in a financial arrangement with someone. John

But I had a boat parked behind my apartment for most of the time I was in college and look how I turned out..............................yeah you probably shouldn't have one.

Here is the scenario you will run into...Maybe you want to bring the boat home for a weekend because you want to fish with some friends there but Partner2 and Partner3 throw a fit because they had planned on using it the same weekend. Also, inevitably, someone will use it, break something they don't want to have to pay for, then put it back in storage. Next time you go to use it, you load up and take it to the lake, launch the boat, run across the lake, get setup to fish, and the trolling motor won't come on. sms_alum Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Save your money because your going to need it. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have graduated if I had a boat and vehicle to pull it in college.
WHARFRAT Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Probably not what you were wanting to hear. But it's all good advise. Stuff happens in 50/50 partnerships. So a 4-way partnership is pretty risky, but you'll probably do it anyway. Hope for the best for all of you. And Good Fishing. Just get your studies done first! @lozcrappie
