I just took a 6HP off a john boat that I am going to let a friend use on his private lake. I have had the rig for about 3 years and had never taken the motor off the boat. When I took it off, I noticed there was a black and red wire coming out of the front of the outboard and the wires were clustered with the other wires that connects to the battery? What is the purpose of these wires? I always pull started it just fine, but does that motor have some kind of electrical start that I never knew about? Thanks.

Model # J6RCRM ?

Offered in Manual start only.

Are you sure they are "wires" ..... or a kill switch lanyard?

Post me some pics with the cowling off.

will post pics tomorrow. The wires were connected to the battery, along with the ones that ran the TM, depth finder, lights, livewell, and bilge pump.

Looks like someone added a rectifier to provide 12VDC from the stator. Probably only puts out a couple amps, just enough for some running lights at night.

I can't dance like I used to.

Someone has installed a charge coil and rectifier from a 15hp....I assume to help charge a battery. That's crazy :)

You'd have to run a long ways to make much of a difference. It's only 6amps so you'd burn enough gas to have just bought another battery

Actually it looks factory. I'll have to research that. Interesting.

Gimme a model number. That's not a "Johnson", it's an Evinrude, ya putz.
