Fishslayer88 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 I find mine in soft river/creek bottoms usually around sycamore trees.
DChance Posted April 14, 2014 Author Posted April 14, 2014 Ok awesome. I think that I am in a good area then. we have an couple creeks that run by my house. Last year was my first year looking and I didn't get out until late in the season. I found maybe 20 big yellows and even more that were too old to pick. I just walked the creek and found them in the same areas as you mentioned. I checked this past weekend and found nothing. so I am hoping that I am just early and they haven't popped yet.
Fishslayer88 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Found these today and I left probably twice as many that were only pinky sized .
blue79 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 After my post this morning I went and looked at the couple of spots i have in this area and there was none up yet.Ended up walking the fields for arrowheads then went to the river and fished.
darbwa Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Glad I read this. I walked out of my office in Tulsa and through some trees and found a few during break time. Is there a better time of day to go hunting? I have never eaten morels that I have picked. Is there any chance of me picking something I should not eat if it looks similar to what I have seen in these photos? Anyone have any favorite recipes they would like to share?
DChance Posted April 14, 2014 Author Posted April 14, 2014 you all are a little bit south of me yet too. I may sneak out this evening in the cold and check today after the rain.
Fishslayer88 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Look up the false morel they look way different then the ones you want to eat but people have mistakenly picked them. I usually just wash them in a noodle strainer cut them in half soak in salt water for a few hrs to tender them and get rid of bugs and then dip in egg then flour fry to golden brown and salt them.

BUT instead of flour try coating with egg wash and crushed saltines and fry. Better than the flour.
