willyfish Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Does anyone throw the old Rebel Pop R anymore? Or any poppers for that matter. Any tricks of the trade would be appreciated.
rps Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Though I rarely fish it anymore, I found the Chug Bug very productive on Table Rock. The key seemed to be that the first motion you make should be after it settles (no rings) and be very subtle. I often had hits while it was sitting quietly or after it quivered. If that failed, I usually worked it back to the boat with a staccato pop pop pop pop. The reason I stopped fishing it and the Spook was my discovery of a bait that I could use either way. See my avatar. If you search the forum for Top Dollar you will find a number of threads that discuss it. Good Luck.
Bill Babler Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 The Pop-R has always been a great bait, but as has been stated the Chugbug and the Yellow Magic have kind of replaced it as the lure dejure in the chugging worlds. Still here for topwater the wake baits are probably thrown more than anything, with the invincible Zara Spook a close second, if you can walk the dog. Hopefully this warm weather will bring those fish back up as the TWB has just been non-existent for about a week. Good Luck http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
dtrs5kprs Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 There is a great window after the spawn for little chuggers, including the pop r. Usually late May into early June. At times they work as well or better than the wakers and spooks, and work with a little more wind.
mwfischer Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Pop r is deadly around docks on loz as well in early to mid summer, always have one close by if docks are abundant.
Ealy Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Poppers still work at times. My first keeper today came on the Yellow Magic. It's funny, I caught it after 3 casts with it, and put it down about a dozen casts later. Why I lose faith in something so quickly after seeing it work is beyond me. I just didn't feel like it was the deal, yet.
REDSOXWSCHAMP Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I love throwing a pop-r, and a chug bug around docks and riprap on the rock, best colors for me chrome/blueback, with strip of flo. orange on belly

I swear, the minute I get into them sometimes my mind starts spinning, thinking of a dozen other things (or places) they'd bite better. LOL

LOL Yeah, apparently I've got this keen sixth sense that enables me to know the difference between catching a fish on a freak accident and a pattern. Luckily it always works and never leaves me second guessing.
