magicwormman Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Got a couple of rigs from Dave and decided to give them a try. I was fishing between point 9 and 16 on Wednesday. Caught lots of fish, but mostly shorts. I found out Dave was right on about the brown fish. They go crazy over that bait. Took a couple from Sheridan, WY this morning from 9 to noon and had his wife throw the rig the entire time. Yes, she out fished me with 3 keepers. Took my wife out after the rain this P.M. and both threw the little rig for about two hours. Several shorts and only two keepers, but this 21 inch beauty happened to be my biggest this year. She was caught in five feet of water on a secondary point up the James. All the bass were released to fight another day. Thanks again Dave for the lures and advice. You are my new hero.
motoman Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Wowsers! That's a beauty. Nice big fish on a teenie-tiny bait!:-) - Any guess what she weighed?(I have my thoughts, but I'm usually wrong; and too embarrassed to say:-P)
dtrs5kprs Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Ken, that is far too kind. I should not be a hero to anyone. Heroes run into burning buildings, or perform CPR on the side of the road. I just want to see people catch more fish. We are going pond hopping tomorrow and will give your worms a run. Just had too much wind to throw them the last day I was at TR. Thanks again for sharing them.
fishingaddiction Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Congrats on a nice fish on the little rig. Born to Fish. Forced to Work.
Sam Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 I seldom fish for bass, but after reading about the Ned Rig here I launched out of Mill Creek a couple of days ago and gave those big green fish a try. To tell the truth, I was looking for nesting goggleyes on gravel points and coves - but found that wasn't going on quite yet. Turning to bass, I fished nothing but the Ned Rig using half a Green Pumpkin Senko on the 3/32 oz. barbed-collar 1/0 gold hook crappie jig heads I pour, held on with a drop of super glue. Yep, the Ned Rig works. I caught bass all day, including 4 that would have been keepers - the best a 18.5" LM. I was throwing fairly close to gravel banks and found most of the bass in 10'-15' of water. I was rolling it as slow as I could near the bottom, just a steady, slow retrieve, trying to not touch the bottom (which had green slime). Strangely, I seldom felt any bites - as I'd lift the rod tip I'd think I was stuck on a rock and I'd apply pressure. Then the "rock" would pull back, I'd set the hook, and well ..... you know. I fished this rig with a medium/heavy 6' spinning outfit and 8 lb. mono, which I thought worked just fine. With that Ned Rig, even a poor old raggedy crappie fisherman like me can catch bass sometimes.
dtrs5kprs Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Sam...it has a lot of similarities to crappie fishing. It is also not the only bait we use. You would probably love some of the little feather jigs, kind of like float and fly jigs. Some of the Garland and GYCB panfish baits fit in nicely, although they do shred up. Good to hear you had fun with it.
magicwormman Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 Thanks for the congrats!! I didn't weigh her, but would guess her at 5 1/2 to 6 lbs. It was definitely my best fight of the year with 6 lb test line and a medium action rod. I've struggled this year catching any big fish, even throwing the crazy umbrella rig early this year. Maybe some of the big girls will start to come out to play. What I like about it, you can fish it so many ways, and anyone can catch fish on it. Thanks to all the great fisherman who post on this forum to help so many of us catch fish.
