motoman Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 promised to report on my first experience with uncle ned. it was a bust!!!!! i wasted two zeros gluing them to 4, 1/4 oz weedless mushroom heads. (its all i had )seems to me they sunk like a brick and didnt have any action. but ive got two 6'10'' ml spinning rods with 6lb floro spooled up so as soon as i can get some 1/16 and 1/8 oz mushroom jigs i'll try it again. i think all the crappie fishing ive been doing last couple of years will help me catch on to fishing the ned pretty quick i hope. i want to thank all of you for the good advice all i need to do is just get rigged right and i think i'll enjoy it as much as you guys do. - Don't get discouraged there jim; I think that 1/4 ounce may be too heavy. Since you crappie fish; you'll be an ace with the 1/16 ounce! - Don't expect much action from them when fishing 'em; I think that's the key, they don't do much at all?
dtrs5kprs Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Doug is spot on. You just overwhelmed the little bait. I played with some 3/16oz heads in wind for the first time this spring and they were a screaming disaster. Just way too much weight. And he is also correct, action in the conventional sense is not the goal. Just a very subtle "something" in the water near the fish is what you are presenting. Ideally, you just want the fish to barely sense that something is there, without shouting "look at me" at them.

dtrs5kprs Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Good reports! What's everyone's favorite bait for the Ned rig?? The elaztech stick baits, either the Zman zinkerz or the SK Zero (same bait), cut in half, is the basic bait. Lots of other things work, but those shine.
Members GoinIke33 Posted May 14, 2014 Members Posted May 14, 2014 Awesome thanks! headin down this weekend. Been reading a lot about it! Hopefully it pays out! Thanks again! Green pumpkin?

dtrs5kprs Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 ive got 3pks of pearl wht zeroes and i was wondering if they will take die. i was thinking about trying to die them purple. Unfortunately they will not take dye or scent. Have tried in about every way, as have many others. Save the pearl white and try them in the summer. It is not a color that usually does much for me. Colors are pretty much PBJ or the greens.
Sac River Jim Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 thnx dtrs i didnt think they would take die but wasnt sure. i bought the only pk of zinkers wally world had at Aurora the other day but i will be taking mom to a doc appointment in joplin on thursday so i plan on stopping by academy sports and hopefully pick up everything i need. my crappie club doesnt fish again till june21st so i plan on doing alot a bass fishing between now and then.

That pearl may whack the bigger crappie. I don't know. It would certainly be worth trying. There is a very good crappie guy from out by Topeka who fishes the KS crappie lakes with the little rig. Ned has some stories up on him. Most of the big crappie I catch on it come on the brown/green colors. Had one 15" earlier this spring, and had a pic of one in that class from Don Baldridge the other day. Pic is stuck in my 2007 flip phone. He hit that one up at Lake Springfield I think, and it had the PBJ stuck in it.
