RSBreth Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 I mostly like natural colors but for Smallmouths I have a couple of "hot" colors that work better sometimes - orange in a couple of saltwater Spit'n'Images and clown in the newer XRap Walk.
LarrySTL Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Do not rule out ( yes I read "clear water") the old Black Shore Minnow color. Weird but true, when its on, it can be impressive. http://intervenehere.com

Old plug Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 I would say do not worry about the color. 99% of this color stuff is blown to the heavens. If anything go to something natural if you want to. But its action that get them on the spook thats for sure. Vary your action as well do bot just walk it. I have had bass hit the plug after I paused it then started in it in again.
Al Agnew Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Do the butterscotch sides work for any particular reason? I figured that the belly of things they are going to attack on the surface would be gray to pearl in color, unless I am wrong.Nah, I don't have any particular reason why it would be good, I just kinda like that color and have ever since I was a kid and we used to catch big largemouth on a "butterscotch Buck'n'Bawl". I'm always rather partial to brownish colors in smallmouth lures anyway.
fishinwrench Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Anyone that claims that color doesn't matter is being vague. Color definitely does matter. Sometimes more than others, but it always has a value associated with it that shouldn't be ignored. Water color, makeup of the bottom, sky conditions, and oftentimes the season of the year can dictate the most productive color patterns of different baits.
Old plug Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Wrench I did not say color may not matter. I said it thought it is blown out of proportion. What has always bothered me is that I am aware is that they see a color range beyond our spectrum. So I feel like we do not know exactly what they see. That is why I wish someone would run test on all these fishing lines.I would bet that some might be more visible than what we think. I think that retrieve and sound got a lot more to do with it than the color. I see people on here talking about tiny color variations. I think that is overdoing it. Really it does not really matter to me. I am comfortable using colors that I hope are more natural.
