New To Red Fins...

Bitethis

Recommended Posts

So I have seen some recent discussion around wake baits and "Red Fins", which I can only assume are the hardbaits made by Cotton Cordell. I have never used them, but it sounds like I am missing out...

How, when, what conditions, and what color?

Oh boy. Don't know if I can handle another thread of red fin discussion. Just search "red fin" in the search bar here and you will get more info than you bargained for and then some. That topic, wiggle wart and now ned rig threads have been exhausted to the ends of the Earth on this forum.

Brett's just cranky because his keep diving and won't wake.

In short...

The big jointed fin is the animal in question. Chrome or smokey Joe. Take all the heavy duty striper hardware off and replace it with lighter rings and lighter hooks. Slap a suspendot or two on the belly at the back half of the front section. Add a feather tail hook. Expect about 6 of 10 to not run properly. Be frustrated, deal with it by buying more.

Throw it on gravel, runout points, bluff ends, etc. Don't let it dive (the hard part). I like to throw it on braid to keep it up on top.

There are others that work, including the non jointed fin, Mikey, etc. Jointed jitterbug was hot last spring.

I've all but given up on the Red Fin and have switched to baits that actually run as they should out of the frickin' box. But I still have them in the box waiting to be tinkered with......again.....and probably....again.

But there's nothing quite like it when they are eating it. Worth the work.

It's fine when they will let you run a bait faster. It does not slow down as well as the fin.

Yep. Got one and you have to keep it going at a little bit of a clip to get it to "wiggle diggle". I have a Buckeye Wakeup that I am thinking of cutting in half (roughly) and making it jointed. It floats high (balsa wood) and won't dive at any speed it's just lacking that jointed killer movement that the Red Fin has. I hate cutting up a $20 bait bit heck it's just taking rides without ever getting wet these days. If I could get that right I really think that would be a monster of a wake bait.

Thank you! I did find the other posts, and weeded through a lot of talk about them that made me wish i had some right now, and that I never had to use one all at the same time. It looks like a love/hate relationship type of lure.
