5bites Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 To address your question about waypoints; my HDS units are networked so when you enter a waypoint into one of them, or save a screenshot related to a waypoint, it is on all the units. I'm sure Hummingbird does the same thing. Thanks for the answer. I figured that they surely did. Humminbird links via ethernet cable. The older models need interlink.
Sac River Jim Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 if all works out i'm buying a 20' champion tomorrow that has new 561 hummingbirds on it but im looking to upgrade the console unit to an hd unit. im just an old dog that doesnt learn new tricks very easy so im leaning towards the hummingbird 698ci HD SI but to be quite honest im pretty lost in knowing what to look for as far as the capabilities of the units. it all looks greek to me!!!
Members gatorbitu Posted June 10, 2014 Members Posted June 10, 2014 I have the HDS 8 (original) and the elite 7 and couldn't be happier with them. I guess I have been lucky because I have never owned anything but Lowrance and have never had any trouble with them.

Screen size is crucial for si units. If you can go up to an 898, 899, or ,998 etc I highly recommend it. Their aren't many tricks to learn. A few basic settings will go a long ways. I and I'm sure other would be glad to help, though I'm far from a guru. bassboatcentral.com is an awesome resource for humminbird info. Also their are a couple places to order from that will save you a lot over local retail prices. There's also buying used as an option.
Sac River Jim Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 thnx for the info i talked to my buddy mike this evening and he has the gen2 hds12 on console and the 7 on the front. he said same thing that the bigger screens will do more and if he cud do it again hed put hds9's on front and back so im considering going with 9's and selling the hummingbirds. i was way under my budget for a truck and the boat so i can afford to buy the upgraded electronics.
5bites Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Good deal. You won't regret it. I've never heard someone say "darn these big screens! I wish I had a smaller one!" Take a serious look at map cards and how good they cover the lakes you fish. Personally I like lakemaster. I'm not sure if they're lowrance compatible though. It's just something to keep in mind.
Sac River Jim Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 i fish in a crappie club and we fish table rock, stockton and pomme. with my mom moving near my sister in ks. im gonna have time to start doing some tournament fishing so i'll look into the map cards. i came in 4500 dollars under budget on my truck and my boat, i pretty much lucked out on the deals they just kinda fell together at the same time yesterday.
Champ188 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Congrats on the new rigs, Jim. I know you're gonna enjoy them!
Members AAD Posted June 11, 2014 Members Posted June 11, 2014 If you get a chance, post some pics of the new rig.... Anytime a plan comes in under budget, and you can still spend up to budget on electronics, that has to be a good day.. Congrats.
