I had heard about Stripers in June at the pothole, but was never fortunate or equipped to catch one. Well that changed late last year when i started fishing Swimbaits. And not the cheap storm stuff, although they catch fish too. I'm talking about Spro BBZ1 line of baits, River2Sea S-waver 168 (6 3/4" long), 6 and 8" Strike King "king kong", and my buddy's custom 10.5" lures. Plus learning which one to throw when, where, and how to present them...

Well here's the result...post-13613-0-37016900-1402355966.jpeg

This 49.0lbs beast, measuring 47 inches long and 31.25 inch girth, was taken on the first cast Friday afternoon. It half inhaled a Spro BBZ1 8" in a Rainbow Trout color, thrown with a custom KGB Swimbaits spec 7'11" heavy-extra heavy swimbait rod and Shimano Calcutta 400 spooled with 20lbs Berkeley Big Game Clear.

The fight took less than 15 minutes and fellow angler let jump on the bow of his boat shortly before his son assisted with getting the fish on board. I did keep it, some may look down upon that, and i didn't let it waste as i properly filleted it. I took plenty of pictures and will have a mount made, but the overwelming feeling of landing this giant fish i just had to show it off to some family and friends.

If i get the pleasant experience of catching another one, I'll be sure to snap some pictures, weigh it and release back to the water.

Oh and i got this decent 5.25 lbs walleye on Saturday on the same BBZ1 and a 6.5 lbs largemouth on a large 6" jointed rapala

Now that's gettin' it done! Nice job, and of course you are entitled to keep any legal catch if so inclined.

Your weekend adds a little extra oomph to the old big bait-big fish theory. :)

Thanks powerdive, i try to keep the cost of the big stuff "manageable", as in 35 dollars per lure is kind of a cut-off point for me. Trust me, the cost of some baits are outrageous, go scan the "hard baits" in the swimbait section of Tacklewarehouse.com. the Roman~Made stuff goes up over 400 per lure. After seeing how well the big stuff works here, I'm hooked.lol

Nice. If I read you right he hit during daylight and that seems to run against the norm.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
