Quillback Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Watched the Mexico vs Netherlands game. The Dutch come back to win after being down 1 -0 at the 87 minute mark. I was rooting for Mexico. Thought that penalty call on Mexico that gave the Dutch a winning penalty kick was weak.
ollie Posted June 29, 2014 Author Posted June 29, 2014 Agreed, that penalty shouldn't have been given. Should have just been a non call and play on IMO. I can't stand it when an important game such as this is decided by a weak PK. Seth Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Costa Rica tied it up late and ended up winning in the penalty kick round. Greece had a ton of chances to score but never could finish. Both games today were fun to watch.

Lancer09 Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Totally agree, the dude should have won an Oscar! I don't have THAT big of a problem with the call per se, however. There should have never been an official from the same federation doing the game. Robben had 2 earlier in the game that were the same or worse that were not called. What that does for Mexico is let them think that is an acceptable play in the game if it already has not been called twice. If they had been called all game long for the guy I wouldn't have had a problem with the call and it probably would not have even been close. But you can't wait until extra time to then decide that a penalty should be called for something you have been letting go all game. Robben even admitted to flopping earlier in the game. The defender however, based on general soccer principles should not have stuck a foot in there, in the box, when he had three other defenders there to help him if need be, poor fundamentals. Herrera got out coached. After Mexico's goal he subbed and took the team's foot off the gas. He played not to lose, and lost instead of playing to win the game. I was rooting for Mexico, but the coaching, and poor fundamentals lost them the game. Unfortunately officiating had a hand in it as well, but that's why you play within the rules to the best of your ability and take the game out of the ref's hands. Granted Herrera was right, they never seemed to get the benefit of the doubt all tournament long and FIFA should be looking into it. I do have a rule change though for BATCAB. How is it that when their is a foul in the box the guy who got fouled doesn't have to take the PK? I mean, at least make the guy who flopped his team's way to a win take the shot instead of the best shooter on the team. I don't see how that is any different than taking a free throw in basketball.
stlfisher Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Yeah...good games yesterday and the penalty called on Robben was weak, but there were two others earlier that could have been called. At the same time Mexico has to be careful in that situation...eventually you keep taking guys down in the box something is going to be called (even though it was very weak). Bummer about Altidore, but even if he could play I am not sure how fit we would be since he hasn't played in several weeks....probably would have to sub him in or out if he could play.

There's a good one. Also seems like there should be more ref's on the field. A ref standing on the baseline would have had a much better look at that flop yesterday.
On The Fly 6 Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Altidore is suppose to be fit enough to play Tuesday. Belgium is gonna be down some players too. Their captain, Kompany, will be out with an injury and its rumored that a few other guys will be out too. That improves our chances. We have the talent to beat Belgium, we just cant start ball watching on when we are on defense. Plus, Bradley has got to step up his game. He has not been in top this whole tournament. ollie Posted July 1, 2014 Author Posted July 1, 2014 Agreed. Bradley needs to stepped it up if we are going to have a chance. If he is in top form then I see no reason why we can't win, but if he doesn't show up it will be a tough game for sure.
