Swim Jig Not Chatter Baits

Some of you may know of the great Piranha Swim Jigs that D&M Custom Baits makes. They are sold at Tackle Warehouse and lots of other places and are famous as ledge fishing baits.

Word is that Zman has sent their patent attorney after everyone who attaches a blade to the front of a jig. So D&M pulled them from their site. I certainly support the rights of someone to defend their patent, but I sure wish Zman would make a bait of the highest quality that is possible if they won't let anyone else make a good one.

I have never made any of these type jigs but do know of a reputable fella who may have some from time to time. Otherwise grab up what is available cause they will all be gone very soon except for the cheap Zman Chatterbaits.

I wonder what they will do about the new Strike King Rage blades? They are a totally different design but do the same thing pretty much...

There's actually lots of companies out there that make bladed swim jigs...I doubt they'll go after all of them...

i think the bait in question that d&m made had a very large coffin shaped blade, which is what z-man has protection on. if you want an even better vibrating jig try the NuTech Lures CrazyJig. it is also available in the Blitz series CrazyJig. more vibration, more snag proof, and much better hook ups.

This isn't the first time they've went after somebody. I believe they got reneoski (sp?) a few years ago.

This was being discussed over on Bass Boat Central. One of the board sponsors that makes and sells lures said that they are only going after the companies that attach the blade directly to the jighead. The sponsor said they came after him, and all he did was attached the jighead to the blade using a split ring and they stopped bothering him. They also said that they were trying to go after Barlows, LurePartsOnline and others who sell the jigheads that come with an open eye made specifically for attaching chatterbait blades and making your own. You can make your own for $2 or less by buying the blades, snap lock swivels, jig heads and skirts from the online tackle part stores. I'm sure they will still be better built than the ZMAN product.

If Zman would put a decent hook on their chatterbaits, I wouldn't have any reason to buy another brands. Instead of just improving their lure, they would rather spend the money on forcing the smaller guys to quit making there own higher quality version of the chatterbait.

That is possibly the worst bait in their entire line. Wish they would sell it to someone who wants to improve it and stay focused on the elaztech plastics.

I bought every Phenix vibrator jig I could get my hands on when z-man forced them out of business.

I have purchased a good number of D& M baits over the last few days as well.

I have enough to last several years, hopefully I will never have to purchase a z man chatterbait.

It is sad that z man puts out such a poor version of a blade jig. The original rad chatterbait was a great concept and a quality bait. Z man not so much.

This is another bait that is just stupid simple to make at home. Just need the blades, snaps, and a jig or spinnerbait mold. On a spinnerbait mold, just run a straight wire instead of a formed one, and form the loop to attach. Needs a good heavy wire.

They are extremely easy to make. Any jig with a flat eye works, just add a split ring to the jig eye, a blade, and a snap and you're good to go. Plus you get to pick your hook size/brand going the homemade route too
