WHARFRAT Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 I had bought a 7' Bass Pro Micro lite rod for shooting docks back during the Spring Fishing Classic. I use the rod quite a bit, and does a pretty decent job shooting docks. It's light enough, but seems to have enough backbone to assist in shooting exactly where you aim. Anyway, a week ago, while shooting, it snapped off about 8" from the end. Bummer! Went to Bass Pro in St. Charles last night, and they exchanged it, no questions asked. @lozcrappie
Seth Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 I had the same rod and it snapped on me when I set the hook on a brush pile. My experience with BPS was the same. Took it in and they replaced it with the same model without any hassle.
fishinwrench Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Those are nice rods for the $$. Love the blank and the handle, but not crazy about the high profile guides or I'd have a whole fleet of them.
WHARFRAT Posted June 25, 2014 Author Posted June 25, 2014 yeah for under 50 bucks, it's a nice rod. One guy that sort of taught me hands on about dock shooting had a cabela's 7 footer. And it was really nice. Felt good, performed good. I checked the price on it, and it was right at 200 bucks!!!!! Hard for me to justify. @lozcrappie
Old plug Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 I have had trouble with pro bas rods snapping.. I remember one time I had a 6 ft"er i was fishing with on a cold winter day and was driving a cast and it broke in. 4 pieces. Felt like a pistol went off in my hand. Snapping was one of the reasons I went to Ugly Stik. i have been using thee different Cherrywood H D rods this season that I really like. They were so cheap $25 bucks if one snaps I can by another. I will see. i do not connect price to quality or duability.
MeatintheFreezer Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Ditto on the cherry wood rods. I found some at Academy last year for $5 each! I bought several of both spinning and casting. I can't complain at all about their performance, especially for the price. Remember - If at first you DO succeed, try not to act surprised & quit while you're ahead.
Sac River Jim Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 i broke a 7 footer a couple years ago and replaced no questions asked. i was at the outlet store the other day and bought 2- 6'ultra lights, 1- 6' light action. 2- 7'6'' ultra lights and 1-pro tourney 9'6'' ultra light rod for 10 bucks a piece i figured some my friends might want one and i like to keep a few combos around to give to kids. they make an excellent starting outfit for a kid when its paired with the crappie max size10 and 20 reels and i picked up 6 of them for 10 bucks a piece too. anybody needs one get with me i'll sell a couple three of them for what i got in em.
Sac River Jim Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 your right old plug those cherry wood rods are a really good rod and better than the bps microlites as far as durability and the microlights are twice the price from over at the main store but for 10 bucks a piece at the outlet store the microlights are a pretty good buy.
Sac River Jim Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 in fact the same day they were putting out 250 rods and one the guys in my crappie club works there and he found me a johnny morris signature series elite 7'10'' mh spinning rod they had mispriced for 35.00 bucks. well i drug it home but im not sure what to do with it. i paired it up with that 40 dollar lews 10 bb size 30 reel and it made a nice set up for less than a hundred dollars spooled with 12lb flouro. i guess i can try it out working big shakey heads if you guys got any other ideas what application to use it for i'm up for suggestions
WHARFRAT Posted June 26, 2014 Author Posted June 26, 2014 I agree with the cherrywood rods, for casting, but they want to wiggle on me when I load them up when shooting. I also have the same problem with the Lews rod that was designed for shooting docks. I went with this MicroLite and it has enough backbone when loading it up, that it doesn't wiggle from side to side. Has anyone tried the Ugly stick GX2 rods. I got one this winter to try out. it's a 6 ft model, lite action.. When the mircrolite tip broke, I tried to shoot with this rod, didn't like it. Might have been because it was a foot shorter than what I'm used to. Seems like a nice rod. It was normally 39.95 on sale for 34.95, and with BPS classic promo going on I got if for 24.95 or 29.95 don't remember. Seems like a really nice rod. Just didn't care for it for dock shooting, but I don't think it was really intended for that. @lozcrappie
