WHARFRAT Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Water Patrol was on end of the lake this weekend. He looked like he was in a hurry Sat morn about 8am. going down towards my area of the lake. Saw him about a half hr going back. I've only had to tow 2 boats, and they have always been at least twice the size of what I was running. Don't know the people in the Rendezvous, I'll have to check them out. I know one of guys that run the Dolphin Deck boat, and he has been having trouble with his boat. I saw you heading up the lake Sunday Morning, Had you already caught your big bass, or were you just getting started? I was just crappie fishing, Lately been accidentally catching a few bass, but never caught one this weekend. Did take the wife and neice out Sunday afternoon for a little trolling. 2 drum, 1 crappie, and a nice eater size channel cat. It was still rather busy on the lake and that was around 4pm. We were trolling out across from Furniture cove. @lozcrappie
Members dennisduckhunter Posted July 1, 2014 Members Posted July 1, 2014 I caught about 15 Croppie yesterday pulling crank baits in the Gravois arm. Also caught three blue cats and three largemouth's. Crappie were all about 11 to 12 inches also very thin. I have a question about a week ago I cleaned 15 and I cleaned 10 this time and about 60% of the fish still had eggs. Is this normal this time of year or did they just not spawn?
fishinwrench Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Apparently many crappie did not deposit their eggs this year. They had ample chance(s).... but passed on the opportunity every time. Likewise with the green bass. And the white bass run was as weak as I have ever seen here on LO. The gar and buffalo didn't even go at it like they usually do. The shad certainly got it done though, so there will probably be an over-abundance of them to go around.
Jerry Rapp Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 mom nature always does her thing, A question FW. What happened to the grass in the early 90's that grew in your area and Old plugs?
fishinwrench Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Jerry, they started drawing the lake down further during the Winter and leaving the shoreline high, dry, and frozen.....an environment NOT very friendly for aquatic vegetation. That's my take anyway.
MOsmallies Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 I'd imagine a lot of home owners didn't like the weeds and sprayed herbicides on their banks during draw downs as well. I always seem to catch a few bass around the remaining water willows in the spring. I wish there were a few more.
fishinwrench Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 There are small isolated patches of milfoil popping up here and there but the fish don't seem to be hanging around any of it. Fish behavior this whole season is just odd to me. Certain little niches and tricks that I could always depend on producing....just don't, or haven't YET. At least not to the degree that satisfies my ego. I'm beginning to think that I spent too much time playing with the fly rods and lost my edge with the gear-fishing.

Old plug Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 I have never ever heard of a home owner spraying any type of herbicide on a bank. It would be easy thing for others to see and I can guarantee you somebody would report it. That would be a giant fine and jail. The drawdown does the job by itself. Yeah it is a real strange season alright. 4 at4lbs and one 5 puts me way off course. I am fishing right in those big boys faces and keep catching fat 13 and 14inch fish. Last nite we got 6 in 3 1/2 hours. no dinks all 13-14 inch fish plus a keeper and one about 3. The whole bunch came out of a ares about 100 yrds long in a matter of a 1/2 hr. The area they came from is not a good spot most years. I was there out of some level of desperation.
fishinwrench Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 There was some folks in Raccoon and Possum hollow that were spreading pellets to kill the coontail/milfoil/hydrilla/whatever back in the day and it was reported to DNR but the stuff had been "approved". It actually made for a sweet place to fish because all the pellets did was create nice clean holes in the weedbeds. My buddy and I were buying "Grasshopper" colored 9.5" Luck-E-Strike ringworms by the 100 bags, and I don't know how many limits of solid 15-17 inchers we took on Tuesday evenings fishing that area but it was a bunch. The place just seemed to reproduce keepers on a daily basis. Pretty cool.
