Went out fishing for the first time on LOZ Saturday morning, July 12th.

Since was not sure what to expect, I started close to the condo, was out on the water by 5:15. Fished a little topwater (black buzz plug and a jointed red fin) with no luck. Saw a few fish hiting TW but I could not get them interested.

After sunup, I moved up the Glaize to fish a few main lake points. Caught a short LM on a Tx rigged black lizzard.

Made another move to MM 4 and tied on a NED* rig, using a green pumpkin/orange Zinker Z and caught a short K on my second cast. Couple casts later got a short smallmouth.

Decided to go hit some docks close to the condo. Unfortunately my front graph locked up on me and would not move past the startup screen. Figured it may be tough locating fish and drop-shotting so I decided to work a few coves and points using a shad colored 6XD. I did catch a couple nice LM on it.

Overall for the first time fishing LOZ, and having most of my large lake experience being on Table Rock, I guess I was OK with my results. It was fun. I was pleased to see the number of boats out fishing early. I didnt know what to expect. I do know that later in the day that my 18ft Tracker Targa did better than I would have expected with the traffic. I have to admit, it was neat to see all the large horsepower boats running about. And I was glad I was not the one paying their fuel bill. Something tells me had I been fishing, I would not have the same opinion.

*For those of you not familiar with the NED, go to the Table Rock forum and search it. You will have hours of reading time...

Ned rig does indeed work at LOZ as it does at TR. Was introduced to it this spring and brought it to the Glaize area this year. On a side note... you caught a short smallmouth in the Glaize arm of LOZ??? Fished there for 15 years and my dad has for 45 and we've only seen one combined and that was a number of years ago. Crazy.

^^^ what he said about the small????

Been fishing this lake a long time and only seen a couple of smallies, usually near Ha Ha Tonka or way up a River... Kinda cool if they are moving but kinda doubtful without photos.... Guess anything is possible...

My best LO smallie was a total freak from the rip rap at Coffman marina 1/2 way up the Osage.

I guess ya just never know.

Some folks camped at Greenmill on the Lil'Ni caught an impressive Northern Pike last Fall (they were calling it a Muskie....but it was definitely a Pike). Sadly it got dragged all over the campground showing it off and was dry and dead when they decided to "release" it.

i caught a smallmouth way up in Mill Creek cove. Was about a foot long.

I run a 18 ft targa and it will take anything LOZ can throw at it.

OP, Next time you drive down South 8, stop on the little mill cr. bridge and look at what's swimming around in that little pool.

They gotta go somewhere else in the Winter. :)

Hmmm,

Didn't know a SM was a rare species at LOZ. I normally don't take photos of short fish.

I've only ever caught one but it was in our cove at the 25 mm. Not close to one of the river arms at all. It was about 12-13". I'll try to dig up the picture tonight. Caught it on a watermelon red baby brush hog back in a pocket with some water willows growing on a chunk rock bank. It was labor day weekend I believe about 5 or 6 years ago.

I have caught 2 smallmouth on Lake of the Ozarks...both in night tournaments in the late 90's. The first one was caught in the Wednesday nighter...the second of the 2 was around 3 pounds and turned some heads at weigh-in at our club tourney! BOTH of these smallmouth were caught out of Moorings yacht club in the Glaize.

I caught a nice one in Ha Ha Tonka some years back but there not even common in the spring branch. You usually have to find clear water in a feeder creek to get SM.
