Mike jones Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 I recently had a transducer mounted inside hull because the first one I had mounted on the transom, got busted off on my first trip out on Beaver...dang trees. Does the detail diminish with the ducer mounted inside the hull? I am running a 798 side and down imaging. Thanks
Tanderson15 Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 I use lowrance and the down scan and side scan have to be outside. I would think the side scan would not work or would have a lot of interference mounted in the hull.
Champ188 Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 You can shoot thru the hull for downscan although you'll lose some resolution. Side scan requires a transom-mounted transducer.
5bites Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 This won't help your problem of breaking transducers but you can run a y cable and have two transducers. One shoot thru for 2d and down scan and the other lead goes to the side scan transducer on the transom.
Mike jones Posted July 28, 2014 Author Posted July 28, 2014 Champ188-That's what I was wondering...I went over a brush pile last weekend with my down scan and there was not much detail at all...just looked like a big rock. With the little screen on the 798, the side scan is pretty useless in my opinion.
Champ188 Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 They estimate you lose 10% clarity but I think it may be a bit more. Does you boat have a jack plate? The reason I ask is I had my side/down scan transducer mounted by Rickey Searcy at Bella Vista Marine and he tucked it inside my jackplate for protection. It's been there a year-and-a-half with no problems at all. Rickey is skilled enough installing electronics that some of the FLW guys seek him out when they're in town every spring.
bfishn Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 ...I went over a brush pile last weekend with my down scan and there was not much detail at all...just looked like a big rock... If a brush pile marks like a solid rock you're getting plenty of return signal. Try lowering the sensitivity until it looks more like a brushpile. I can't dance like I used to.
zarraspook Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 If you are running a Ranger, you can mount the sidescan transducer up under the "set back" ... Mine and both of my sons have them mounted there and no problems as they are out of the water on plane... You have to mount the 2D where it will stay in the water all the time... My "tournament" son has had his "kick up" a dozen + times but, he just pushes it back down and it is still working three years later..
