Kayser Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Finally getting around to floating the Big Piney next weekend, but can't decide what the better float would be. I'm looking at either Sand Shoals to Boiling Springs, or 6 Crossings to Ross. Going to use an outfitter, just haven't decided on one yet. Primarily a fishing float, but still a float trip, so swimming, lounging, and rope swings are very welcome. I plan on taking my fly rod and standard tackle. Plan is to drive down from Rolla early morning, float and do a lot of fishing, and then drive back to Rolla for the night. Does anyone have a suggestion for better fishing? Better floating? WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
Flysmallie Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 If you do the Sand Shoals to Boiling Springs then use Boiling Springs Resort. Great people. Â Â
Kelroy Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Been a long time since I've done 6x. have you checked with wilderness ridge and rich's last resort?
Al Agnew Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 6 Crossings to Ross gets the biggest weekend canoe hatch on the Piney. I've never done very well fishing it, although the water looks pretty good. Sand Shoals to Boiling Spring is quite a bit smaller water and can get too low for easy floating, but I've had some excellent fishing trips up there, though the last time I floated it, several years ago, the fishing was pretty bad...probably just an off day. 6X to Ross is the most scenic section of the river, though, with a bunch of high bluffs.

ozark trout fisher Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 I love that river but 6x to Ross is not where you want to go. Not only crowds but the kind of crowd that can ruin a trip in a heartbeat if you're there for the right reasons (ie, anything this side of loud partying and mass alcohol consumption.) It's firmly on my "stay away list" and that's a list that isn't very long. Al is right, the scenery is great, but it's not enough to balance everything else out IMO. Other parts of the river feel completely different though, and the Big Piney is a jewel outside of that unfortunate stretch. Smallie fishing is good everywhere I've been on it, not a challenging river to fish most of the time.
Members Kcdangler Posted August 15, 2014 Members Posted August 15, 2014 Mason to slabtown or continue to6x but 6x is party central that's where I would take out but not leave a vehicle overnite that's for sure
