BilletHead Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Tomatoes out, Pulled out the trellises and worked up the soil. Planted Fall lettuce and tamped it in with the back of the hard rake. Gave it a mist of water and we will see what happens. Planted three different types and then a mix of leftovers from Spring, Too early to do this with the hot weather? I know the sun is going South pretty quick and days are getting shorter. A lot of shade now in the garden. Will have to water daily if no rain. We will see what goes and I think I will replant in a couple of weeks in the second bed.. Food plot for the deer planted too. Hoping there will be good turnips for eating in there. If we don't get rain might have to drag out the sprinkler for the plot. Stupid spoiled deer! tho1mas Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 You need to get Chief to do a rain dance for you. Most of the big boys say to plant fall crops the first week in Aug. I wait until the first of Sept.
jdmidwest Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 You yanked all the maters? Mine look like crap but they still have alot of tomatoes to go. I yanked my green beans a month ago because they quit blooming, I planted new ones twice and the bunnies have made stems out of them both time. I built another box about the same time and planted fall lettuce and radishes, but the heat is keeping them down. Fall snap peas are starting up the trellis now at about 18" planted the same time. Squash are starting to bloom again and the okra is going good. Cucumbers are still blooming also. I am going to finish out the garden this fall with raised beds for next spring. Feathers and Fins Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 JD, to keep critters out I just put in fence post ( chain link style ) then took bird netting and made a fence with it, its cheap and effective. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Seth Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Do you guys buy good top soil for your raised beds or something special? I'd like to go the raised bed route myself and not deal with a tiller at all but I don't have nearly enough compost ready for very many raised beds.
Feathers and Fins Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 I just bought Flower and Garden mix and potting soil mix then mixed them together. now I just add feed store bought and fish scraps and mix it up real good. In late spring I try to get a 5 gallon bucket of shad and ground it all up and add to the soil then cover with a tarp for winter. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
Wayne SW/MO Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 My tomatoes are probably the best I've had in awhile. I know they'll quit during this coming heat wave, but I'll see them through it because they are new varieties for me. When I was living in OK I generaly planted Big Boys and they quit in late July and the pick up again in September and produce into early November sometimes. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
BilletHead Posted August 21, 2014 Author Posted August 21, 2014 Seth like F&F I amend my soil with potting mix and soil each year. First few years I acquired my soil from barn lots. Took me a few years to weed out so to say weed sprouts. Once this happens it is pretty easy to control what blows in from fields and yard, BilletHead "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" Feathers and Fins Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 One thing I should also add is a I also add 20 dozen night crawlers to it and replenish them as required. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
